LITTLE GRAND CANYON PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“LITTLE GRAND CANYON”
8x6 inch original oil painting

To purchase this, email me at tombrownstudio@cox.net.

I filmed a new segment for the TV show recently, where I painted high in Limestone Canyon near an area known as "Little Grand Canyon."

It is a fantastic location in a very remote wilderness area that is generally off-limits to the general population. A park ranger took us up into the area in a 4 wheel drive vehicle (and we NEEDED all 4 wheels churning away to get there)! The ranger went out of his way to assist us in many ways, and we were very grateful.

A family of mountain lions lives in the area, so the ranger was along to help watch our backs while we filmed. About 50 feet from where I painted we also found two rattlesnake skins that had been shed, so we were careful about where we stepped as well.

Interestingly, we had to cross a major fault line to reach our location and while we were in the canyon an earthquake occurred!

All in all, it was quite a day but well worth the trip! Thanks for stopping to look; I hope you enjoy the view.

CALIFORNIA VINEYARDS, WINE COUNTRY PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“VINEYARD IN WINE COUNTRY”
8x6 inch original oil painting

To purchase this, email me at tombrownstudio@cox.net.
SOLD

California Wine Country offered memorable vintages and a refreshing change of scenery to paint while I was on a recent getaway. I took the time to relax, recharge my creative batteries and paint new scenery just for the sheer joy of it. Everywhere I looked there were new and exciting scenes to capture in oil paint, and I took full advantage of it.

This is another of the paintings created on location there, along with photos of the magnificent scenery. Enjoy the view, and perhaps enjoy a glass of wine at the end of your day.

Thanks for stopping to look.

PLEIN AIR PALM TREE PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“PALM AND CLIFFS AT NEWPORT BACK BAY”
6x5 inch original oil painting
To purchase this, email me at tombrownstudio@cox.net.

This is a demonstration painting I did for my students at a recent Plein Air Workshop (a few of the artists are shown in the photo). Dynamic brush strokes and thick, juicy paint add interesting texture to this painting. That was part of the lesson. Choosing interesting compositions to paint was another important aspect of the demonstration.

I wish all my faithful blog viewers could join me for these Workshops. We always have a great time painting and meet new friends with common interests. Even first-time artists are surprised to discover how easy and fun it is to paint if you know what to do.

For those who can’t join me in person, I have CDs and DVDs that show how anyone can paint well on their first try. The DVDs are episodes from my TV shows where I am filmed live on location painting the scenes in front of us. Email me for details if you’re interested. tombrownstudio@cox.net.

Recently I visited Wine Country where I painted, sampled some memorable vintages and enjoyed a relaxing change of scenery. Last week I posted some plein air paintings done there, and I’ll be showing more of the Wine Country paintings later this week. Watch for them.

DAILY PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE”
5x6 inch original oil painting
To purchase this, email me at tombrownstudio@cox.net.

The sheer simplicity of this setting spoke to me and I couldn’t resist stopping awhile to paint it.

Yesterday I blogged a painting that was done on impulse while taking a recent road trip. This is another done during the same trip. It’s an isolated little home in a parched setting far from civilization.

The house had patchwork repairs, and it seemed to offer few creature comforts. But it is home to somebody.

Thanks for stopping to look. Have a great day.

DAILY PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“ON THE ROAD TO SOMEWHERE ELSE”
5x6 inch original oil painting
To purchase this, email me at tombrownstudio@cox.net.

Sometimes a very ordinary scene speaks to me with the beauty of its unpretentious simplicity.

This was little more than a wide spot on the road to somewhere else. It was a tiny town beside the freeway that I glimpsed while on a recent road trip. I couldn’t help making a slight detour to explore it, and I ended up painting it as well. I shot a photo while I painted, and I have included it here for comparison with the painting.

Thanks for stopping to look. Have a great day.

LARGE PALM TREES, MOON, OCEAN BY TOM BROWN

“ROMANCE OF THE PALMS”
12x16 inch original oil painting on canvas
To purchase this, email me at tombrownstudio@cox.net.
SOLD

This painting of moonlight over the ocean is a much larger than I usually show on my blog. The subtleties of muted color and tone cannot be fully seen on a computer screen. It really must be seen in person to be fully appreciated.

If you’re interested in this painting email me at tombrownstudio@cox.net. Thanks for looking. Have a wonderful day and a romantic evening!

KITCHEN ART, DAILY PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“COMPARING APPLES TO ORANGES”

To purchase this, email me at tombrownstudio@cox.net.
SOLD

I’ve been busy! This week I began teaching two workshops, both of which have full enrollment with waiting lists.

One is an 8-week studio workshop on oil painting. The other is a 5-week Plein Air workshop during which we will meet on location at a new spot each Saturday morning and paint directly from nature.

I wish all my faithful blog viewers could join me for these classes. We always have a great time painting and meet new friends with common interests. Even first-time artists are surprised to discover how easy it is to paint if you know what to do.

For those who can’t join me in person, I have CDs and DVDs that show how anyone can paint well on their first try. The DVDs are episodes from my TV shows where I am filmed live on location painting the scenes in front of us. Email me for details if you’re interested. tombrownstudio@cox.net.

This week on my blog I will be featuring a fun series of still life paintings. Today’s painting plays on the phrase “comparing apples to oranges” and others in the series will also use interesting interpretations of familiar phrases. Stay tuned.

BOATS, HARBOR PLEIN AIR PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“ROCK AND ROLL”
5x7 inch original oil on gessoed fom-cor panel
To purchase this, email me at tombrownstudio@cox.net.
SOLD

The CD I created for Plein Air Painters shows how I often use a pencil sketch to establish values and clarify the composition before beginning a painting. I’m including a photo of the harbor as it actually looked, plus the sketch I did to establish my “value plan” with a couple of changes in the scene.

In this case the preliminary sketch enabled me to envision how the rubber raft on the right would look if I replaced it with a boat that was moored a few yards away. I also eliminated the motor from inside the rowboat. I liked the sketch better with these changes, and painted it that way. I hope you agree.

FARM FRESH EGG DAILY PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“FARM FRESH EGG”
6x6 inch original oil on canvas

I enjoy finding beauty in the commonplace, and expressing that in my paintings. In the previous painting it was the transparency of a plastic bag on a loaf of fresh bread. In today's painting it's the rich color of a farm fresh egg and reflections in a tabletop.

Look for the beauty in the world around you, and have a delicious day filled with joy. Thanks for stopping to look.
