AFFORDABLE MINIATURE OIL PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“A LONG AND PEACEFUL ROAD”
5x4 inch original oil painting by Tom Brown

To purchase this painting, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

About The Painting:
This miniature oil painting is another in my new series called “Little Treasures.” Each one is a small, highly affordable original oil painting celebrating the beauty of our world. I live in Southern California and I paint on a daily basis, often on location (en plein air). These Little Treasures are a way of sharing with others the beauty I see and paint.

For this painting I used a custom metal paintbox that fits on a lightweight camera tripod. This paintbox is completely self-contained and sets up in moments. I simply open the box and paint. When I’m finished, I close the lid and I’m packed to go. My wet palette and fresh painting are safely contained inside. It’s a Plein Air painter’s dream.

Full details are in my electronic handout called “USEFUL TIPS FOR PLEIN AIR PAINTING.” Email me if you’re interested.

About Me:
I’m a lifelong artist and host of a TV Art Instruction show. I also conduct painting workshops where I teach oil painting in the Impressionist style. My paintings have sold through top galleries for over 20 years and my work is in private and corporate collections like Sears, Standard Oil, and Coca Cola.

MINIATURE OIL PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“SNOW CAPPED MOUNTAINS AND PALMS”
5x7 inch original oil painting by Tom Brown
To purchase this painting, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net
SOLD

This was irresistible. Snow-capped mountains in the distance, contrasted with palms and lush foliage in the foreground. I realize it’s hard to believe, so I am including a photo taken while I painted to prove I wasn’t making this up.

I painted this yesterday (February 19th) within walking distance from my home in Southern California. Despite the time of year, I was comfortable painting outdoors wearing a T-shirt and jeans.

I feel very blessed. Within easy driving distance from my home in Southern California I can enjoy a wide variety of landscapes just waiting to be painted. Beautiful coastal scenery and palm trees. Snow-capped mountains. Rolling hills with lush foliage. Or open desert. It is a plein air painter’s Paradise and I am outside with my paints at every opportunity.

SUNSET PLEIN AIR BY TOM BROWN

“DESSERT BEFORE DINNER”
10x6 inch original plein air painting
by Tom Brown

To purchase this painting, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

“Dinner can wait,” my wife exclaimed, “you should really catch that in a painting!” After another rainy day we had decided to treat ourselves at our favorite restaurant. The skies cleared just as we neared the restaurant and this dramatic light show greeted us.

In a flash I pulled off the road and grabbed the lightweight metal paint box that I keep handy in the car. This sturdy little paint box is a treasure, especially at times like this. It holds everything I need; I simply open it and start painting. When the painting is complete I close the lid and it’s safely packed.

This painting was such a treat, it was like enjoying dessert before dinner.

By the way, full details about the paint box are in “USEFUL TIPS FOR PLEIN AIR PAINTING,” an electronic handout originally created for my plein air students. I have now made it available to other artists via email for just $10.

The handout also gives an overview of my plein air working methods complete with two step-by-step demonstrations. And I provide a complete packing list, tips on how to dress for painting outdoors, and details on an innovative tool for solving perspective problems on location. Email me at tombrownstudio@cox.net if you’re interested.

Another plein air painter challenged me to find something to paint on a day when rain was pouring down. Between showers this is the composition I painted: phone poles, framed against a silvery glow in the sky. Birds lined up on the wires, posing for their painting.

Beauty can be found in unexpected places. Look for the beauty around you today, and have a wonderful day. Thanks for stopping to look.

After weeks of rainy weather it was pure joy to get outside and paint again. When the skies finally cleared I wasted no time in getting out with my paints. These golden clouds caught my eye, and this sprawling California ranch looked like a painting waiting to happen.

I hummed Irving Berlin’s “Blue Skies” the entire time I painted this. I hope you have a beautiful day too!

MYSTERY FRUIT PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“MYSTERY FRUIT”
6x6 inch original oil painting
by Tom Brown
If you would like this colorful painting for your wall, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net
SOLD

I can’t remember the name of this fruit, but it makes a great subject for a still life. I believe this fruit is a cross between a tangerine and a grapefruit. They are similar to large oranges with an unusual top.

In my evening workshop this week the project was to paint still life compositions from life. One of the artists brought in several branches like this from a fruit tree in her yard and generously shared them with others to use in paintings.

After class she gave me several of these and I painted this the next morning while the leaves were still fresh. Now that I’ve painted them I can sample the fruit. Yumm.

WINTER SCENE BY TOM BROWN

“A BRISK MORNING”
5X6 inch original oil
Painted in the warmth of my studio

A friend in the U.K. emailed me a photo yesterday showing how different the weather is where he lives compared to sunny Southern California where I make my home. I couldn’t resist doing a small painting from his photo.

With his permission I am showing his photo, from which I painted this. For the artists who follow my blog I am also including step-by-step images of the painting as it developed.

I kept it very simple. I began with a gray-toned panel and lightly sketched the big shapes with thinned paint. Then I began establishing the lightest tones as well (1).

Once these were in place, I blocked in the darker tones to define the fence, car and shrubs. And I placed a few dark tones in the background that would become the distant trees (2). From that point on, it almost painted itself.

With a few strokes of the brush the tones in the background quickly became trees, sky, the neighbor's home, etc (3). For the foreground, I used a few very bold, loose strokes to give it a bit of life. And it was done. Click the image at the top for a larger view.

Thanks for sharing the photo, Vic. Stay warm!

PLEIN AIR PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“TREES ALONG THE TRACKS”
6x6 inch plein air oil painting
by Tom Brown
If you would like this little gem for your wall, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

I spotted these trees along a local walking path near railroad tracks. I had my lightweight plein air kit handy and quickly set up my gear to capture this in oils. I was especially interested in the lighting and color, but in addition to that I felt this was an opportunity to use expressive brushwork in this little study. I was pleased with the results. Hope you like it too.

Full details about the painting kit are in “USEFUL TIPS FOR PLEIN AIR PAINTING,” an electronic handout originally created for my plein air students. (Now available for just $10 via email.)

The handout also gives an overview of my plein air working methods complete with two step-by-step demonstrations. LARGE CALIFORNIA LANDSCAPE PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“ROLLING HILLS OF CALIFORNIA”
12x10 inch original oil painting
by Tom Brown

This is a larger painting than I usually post on my blog. It was painted in a studio, which permitted a more considered approach than plein air paintings where the light and weather conditions are constantly changing. The colors in this painting are especially rich and subtle. It really must be seen in person to be fully appreciated. If you are interested in purchasing it, email me for details: tombrownstudio@cox.net

Thanks for stopping to look.
