Intimate glimpses of nature’s details are always a delight to paint.

As a plein air painter I often paint the majestic grandeur of rolling hills, open countryside, mountains, boats and harbors, and even city scenes.

But sometimes I like to discover nature’s hidden little treasures like this and record them in a painting. This piece seems to offer a bit of tranquility in today’s hectic world. I hope you like it.

Many artists who follow this blog have been inquiring about my Plein Air Painting videos. All my earlier videos are currently sold out, but I am excited to announce that I have just released TWO NEW VIDEOS from my TV show on Plein Air Painting.

Each video was filmed entirely on location, and the camera zooms in very tight to capture subtleties of color mixtures on the palette and brush techniques as I apply strokes of rich, juicy oils to the canvas.

“JEFFREY OPEN SPACE TRAIL” follows me from start to finish as I work on a large toned panel. You’ll see how to create color variety and continuity throughout the canvas. You will learn about underpainting and overpainting, as well as how to mix the proper consistency of paint for various effects, and much more. In this video I also demonstrate a variety of practical and inexpensive equipment options you can make for outdoor painting.

“PAINTING PLEIN AIR MINIATURES” follows the development of TWO separate paintings in a single video. In this lesson I discuss when, why and how to paint miniatures on location. This video includes lessons on how to unify value-masses in your paintings to create solid compositions, how to lead the eye to the focal point and how to create sizzling surface texture.

Each video is priced at $30 while supplies last (but supplies are limited). Shipping is free within the USA. To order videos email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

Vasquez Rocks was the inspiration for this painting of a high desert vista. This has been the setting of many Hollywood movies because of the stunning, Southwestern scenery. I once conducted a weekend-long plein air workshop for other artists at this location and have been in awe of this scenery ever since.

PARK VENDOR, PLEIN AIR PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“SOMETHING TO BRIGHTEN YOUR DAY”
6x8 inch original urban plein air
oil painting by Tom Brown

To purchase this painting, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net
SOLD

Occasionally I enjoy painting in urban settings and capturing a moment in the life of the city. This bright yellow vendor cart at the edge of a busy park caught my eye and I set up my easel in the shade of a tree.

There were many passersby and I painted my impression of them into the composition. None of this was done from photographs. The entire painting was done from life, and it was a challenge to capture the figures since each of them had to be painted from a brief glimpse as they passed through. I was pleased with the result, and I hope you like it too.

URBAN PLEIN AIR PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“ROOM WITH A VIEW”
6x6 inch original urban plein air
oil painting by Tom Brown
To purchase this painting, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

Occasionally I enjoy setting up my easel on a street corner and capturing a moment in the life of the city. The decorative architecture of this window in sunlight caught my eye. But more than the architecture attracted me.

Windows have always fascinated me. They offer a way to view the world, the seasons, friends and activities beyond the building. They offer both a barrier and an open invitation. A certain level of mystery accompanies windows above the ground level. They cannot be looked into, and therefore seem to hide secrets while revealing the outside world to anyone inside.

I was pleased with this piece, and hope you like it too.

EVENING SONG, PLEIN AIR PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“EVENING SONG”
10x3 inch original plein air
oil painting by Tom Brown

To purchase this painting, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

The sounds of nature are like a song if you listen with your heart. It’s one of the many things I treasure about painting outdoors.

The melody evolves as the rhythm and mood of the day changes to a slower tempo at twilight, finally transitioning to the soft, sweet serenity of night.

These feelings seem to find their way into plein air paintings, adding a note of richness to the piece that will always be there to enjoy.

PLEIN AIR STUDY FOR HARBOR SCENE by TOM BROWN

“SILVER LIGHT UPON THE WATERS”
Plein Air Study by Tom Brown

To purchase this painting, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

This 5-minute palette knife study was done as a demonstration for my plein air students. I wanted to show how to capture the fleeting light and color of a scene in which conditions were likely to quickly change.

In this brief study I was able to record the silver light sparkling across the harbor, the color of the sky, the foggy blur of the distant shore and placement of a few key palm trees. Several kayakers cut across the scene as I painted this, and they were recorded with just a few strokes of a brush.

Then I was able to use this study as reference for lighting and color while I created a more detailed painting of the harbor.

While I painted the larger canvas it became very apparent how valuable this study was. The sun changed direction, the color of the sky and water changed, the fog lifted and altered the colors across the harbor and the entire scene was altered.

This little study kept me on target and enabled me to maintain lighting conditions in my painting that were present earlier in the morning.

I thought it might be interesting to give this little glimpse behind the scenes to show the working process that sometimes goes into my larger paintings.

This mysterious-looking cave at the edge of the ocean in Laguna Beach brought back childhood memories of Pirate stories like “Treasure Island”.

It was a gray and misty morning with pounding surf that lapped at my feet as I painted this. I felt as if I was in the middle of a storybook setting. These are some of the unique bonuses that come from painting en plein air. I was very pleased with this painting. I hope you like it too.

For this painting I used my compact metal paintbox, which enabled me to be set up and painting less than 2 minutes from the time I spotted this scene. The light changes quickly, and it’s important to have equipment that enables me to move fast to capture it in a painting. This was painted during a recent plein air workshop I taught, and it was a day to be remembered.

SOUTHWEST PLEIN AIR PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“GOOD COMPANY”
8x10 inch Southwest Plein Air Painting
by Tom Brown

To purchase this painting, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

A large lizard kept a cautious eye on me as he basked in the warm sun near my easel. Santiago Creek is dry this time of year and the creek bed offered me a unique vantage point from which to paint this beautiful Southwest scene.

It was a quiet day and I was completely alone except for this solitary lizard. I suppose I was invading his territory, and I was careful to leave him undisturbed.

He was good company as I worked and I enjoyed watching him in his natural habitat. Observing wildlife like this is of the joys of painting on location. Sensations like this seem to find their way into the painting, imbuing it with a richness not found in studio works.

I hope you like the painting. Thanks for looking and have a wonderful day!

AFFORDABLE PLEIN AIR OIL PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“OCEAN MAGIC”

About this painting:

I call these miniature oil paintings my “LITTLE TREASURES.” A small painting like this can make a big statement. Sometimes these little gems sparkle like a piece of fine jewelry. I think this is one of those times.

I created this as a study in preparation for a larger painting, then realized that this is a finished painting in its own right.

I painted this at the surf’s edge in Laguna Beach, using my compact paintbox design that is becoming so popular with Southern California plein air painters.

The paintbox is completely self-contained. I simply open the box and paint, then close the lid and I’m packed to go. My wet palette and fresh painting are safely contained inside. Its light weight and compact size make it ideal for climbing down a cliff to the beach when I want to capture a special lighting effect like this.

Many of my plein air students are now using the same paintbox and suggested I make the information available to artists across the country. In response to this request I’ve put full details about it in my electronic handout called “USEFUL TIPS FOR PLEIN AIR PAINTING.” The handout is now available for $10 via email. Let me know if you’re interested.

About Me:

I’m a lifelong artist and host of a TV Art Instruction show. I also conduct painting workshops where I teach oil painting in the Impressionist style. My paintings have sold through top galleries for over 20 years and my work is in private and corporate collections like Sears, Standard Oil, and Coca Cola.

Thanks for looking. Have a beautiful day!
