CALIFORNIA IMPRESSIONIST PLEIN AIR PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“BESIDE THE POND”
5x7 inch California impressionist
plein air oil painting by Tom Brown

This was painted during a Saturday morning plein air class I conducted at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary recently.

As we painted, a large bullfrog made very loud croaking noises from a spot among the reeds at the edge of the pond. Ducks and blue herons were in the pond near us and lizards scurried across the walking path.

It was a wonderful day to be outside with our paints.

CALIFORNIA IMPRESSIONIST PLEIN AIR PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“NEWPORT HARBOR SPARKLE”
5x7 inch California Impressionist
Plein Air Oil Painting by Tom Brown

I call these miniature Plein Air paintings “Little Treasures” because they are like small jewels that bring a special richness to any room in the home.

This is a view of the harbor in Newport Beach. Late afternoon light sparkled across the water, and yachts were gently bobbing at their moorings. It was a very restful experience – the kind of memory to treasure always.

And that’s the feeling I tried to capture in this painting. I hope I did, and I hope you like it.

SOLD

I call these miniature Plein Air paintings “Little Treasures” because they are like small jewels that bring a special richness to any room in the home.

This is a view of the coastline in Laguna Beach, viewed from near Las Brisas restaurant. The day was hazy, with sparkling light reflecting off the water – pure magic. And that’s the effect I tried to capture in this painting. I hope I did, and I hope you like it.

Oranges and apples (shown on my blog previously) are featured in other paintings. And cherries are featured in two of the paintings.

Yesterday I showed the first cherry painting and this is the companion piece.

11X14 INCH FRESH FRUIT PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“A TASTE OF SUMMER”
11x14 inch impressionist oil painting

Roadside farm stands offer succulent treasures at this time of year. In addition to being delicious to eat, this colorful selection of fruit made a wonderful subject to paint. That’s a definite bonus in my home!

URBAN BEAUTY, PLEIN AIR PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“ORDINARY BEAUTY”
6x8 inch original plein air
oil painting by Tom Brown

While waiting in my car at the edge of a parking lot, I opened my little pochade box to pass the time. Before I knew it this painting had happened.

I guess beauty can be found even in the most ordinary places. Look for the beauty in your day, today and every day. Better yet, share that with someone else.

CAN OPENER by TOM BROWN

“THE BEAUTY OF NO-TECH”
6x6 inch original impressionist oil painting
by Tom Brown

SOLD

There is something reassuring in simple solutions.

With all the hi-tech advances that we feel compelled to own it’s nice to find a simple no-tech solution that still works.

There is a beauty about such things when we look closely.

The way light glints off this hand-cranked can opener, or the way shadows stretch out as they move away from it across a tablecloth.

If the weight of the world is getting you down, step back and look to the past. It can be a step in the right direction.

ART, BARNS AND PHILOSOPHY by TOM BROWN

“PATCHWORK QUILT”
8x10 inch original impressionist
oil painting by Tom Brown
SOLD

In time a barn may need more storage, so an addition is built. Succeeding generations continue the trend.

And eventually the effect resembles a patchwork quilt, home-made and effective. Full of wonderful, rich stories if we listen carefully.

Artists are visual storytellers. We can reach out to someone and touch their heart. And let them know we see and feel the same things they see and feel.

I try to do this in my art. And in my teaching. Like the online art lesson yesterday, where I showed artists how to capture a sunset on canvas and share it with others.

A good storyteller can soothe the soul after bad news or a hard day’s work. And lift the spirits to carry on until the next day or the next story.

We’re all in this life together. And if I can reach out to touch someone and make their day a bit brighter, then maybe they will feel more connected. More secure. A good story can do that. I hope mine does.

Thanks for looking. Make your day a beautiful story!

FARM PLEIN AIR IMPRESSIONIST PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“OLD FARM”
6x8 inch original plein air oil painting
by Tom Brown
SOLD

Old farms have a unique feeling about them. A special scent in the air from fields that have been worked for generations. Ancient buildings that creak in the wind. The buzzing hum of insects and chirping of birds. Dried grasses rustling underfoot. Handmade fences to climb or just sit on to take a rest. I was raised in farm country and old farms have always held a special place in my heart.

Oreo cookies and milk have been a favorite snack of mine since childhood. Some things can’t be improved upon.

OCEAN PLEIN AIR IMPRESSIONIST PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“LIQUID THUNDER”
6x8 inch original plein air oil painting
by Tom Brown
SOLD

The clean fresh smell of salt air and piercing cries of gulls are part of what I enjoy whenever I paint at the ocean. It’s the total experience that gives seascapes so much emotion.

The crashing surf pounding on the rocks at the edge of the beach. The hypnotic effect of the waves as they ebb and flow. Sand in my shoes after a day at the beach. And the special light that results from the sun’s rays reflecting off the water into the atmosphere. It’s always a bit of pure magic.

SUNSET PLEIN AIR IMPRESSIONIST PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“HAPPY HOUR”
6x8 inch original plein air oil painting
by Tom Brown

SOLD

I love painting the landscape at sunset, when the magic sweeps across the hills during the final moments of golden sunlight.

Capturing the special light and color at this time of day is a unique thrill for any outdoor painter. But it has its own set of rules that are very different from painting at other times of the day.

In fact, I will be conducting a special plein air class for other artists at sunset this Saturday to help them share the experience. Wish you were there.

UNIQUE PLEIN AIR IMPRESSIONIST PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“LAGUNA BEACH STUDY”
21x4.5 inch original plein air oil painting
by Tom Brown

SOLD

This is a piece I did as a preliminary study. I painted this on location at Heisler Park in Laguna Beach, with plan to use this as the basis for a larger studio piece.

Since taking this back to my studio I have decided that it seems to stand on its own as a finished piece, as loose as it is. There is a certain charm to the subtlety of hues in the distance and a drama to the panoramic sweep of the composition.

Currently it lives on my studio wall, but I felt it would be interesting to share it here on my blog.

Artists - Next Saturday (August 15th) I plan to conduct a Plein Air Workshop at sunset. For a nominal fee it is open to any artist who wishes to join us.

Painting at sunset is different than at other times of day. Much of the preparation on your canvas occurs BEFORE the actual color and light happens, and it is important to be fully prepared in advance for the moment when the sun actually sets.

If you are interested in attending email me for details at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

CHURCH PLEIN AIR IMPRESSIONIST LANDSCAPE by TOM BROWN

“SUNDAY MORNING SERVICES”
5x7 inch original plein air oil painting
by Tom Brown

This painting was done in a small town up the coast during one of my trips not long ago. It was a quiet Sunday morning when the church bells rang out and drew me to this spot.

A sense of peacefulness and friendship filled the scene as members of the congregation met and welcomed each other. That was the feeling I tried to capture in this painting.

Next Saturday I plan to conduct a Plein Air Workshop at sunset. For a nominal fee it is open to any artist who wishes to join us.

We will meet at a location in Irvine with a wonderful vantage point for the sunset. Free parking and public restrooms are available at this location.

We plan to meet from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. Sunset will be at 7:37pm that day, and we should have glorious lighting effects because it is predicted to be sunny the entire day.

“TAKING A DAY OFF”
Plein Air California Impressionist Oil Painting by Tom Brown
11x14 inch original oil painting, ready to frame.

On my TV show and in workshops I conduct in Southern California I teach other artists how to paint en plein air. But this painting was done for my own personal pleasure. I liked the lines of this boat and the colors along the hull.

It was sitting at the edge of a launching area, as if it was taking a day off. Which gave me the idea for the title.

There has been so much interest in my tips on how to create Red-Hot Art Sales that I have decided to mention it one more time.

If you’re already selling all the art you want, skip the rest of this message. If not, this may be exactly what you need to create RED-HOT SALES during a down economy.
Here’s a small sampling of what it covers:

- Getting others to sell for you – free
- The 6 rules of viral marketing
- How to write for the internet
- Finding more collectors
- Hi-tech & lo-tech selling The entrepreneurial experience and lots, lots more!

The cost is just $20. How many art sales will it take to recoup that?

SOLD

This was painted during a plein air workshop I conducted in a wilderness sanctuary last weekend. We had beautiful weather, stunning scenery and a great group of friendly artists in the group. It was a perfect day to be outside playing with our paints. Thanks for stopping to look.

And thanks to all the artists who have sent such enthusiastic comments about my guide to selling their artwork in these economic times that have stumped so many other artists. I'm glad to hear of your successes.
