TOM BROWN MINIATURE ART, ACEO, POSTCARD POCKET PAINTING

“PEACH SKY” is an original oil painting, a little jewel with lots of sparkle. And it would make a wonderful Mother’s Day gift.

Paintings this size are known by various names such as miniatures, ACEOs (Art Cards Editions & Originals), postcard paintings or pocket paintings. And they are highly collectible.

When time or circumstances do not permit a larger painting these small sizes allow me to explore an idea, capture a moment on location or work out problems before launching into a large painting in the studio.

This painting is a mere 4”x3”. It is small enough to fit in your pocket or use as an elegant bookmark. It is painted with genuine oil paints on an art card and will be shipped in a plastic protective sleeve.

The painting is sold unframed, but I have included photos showing how it might be displayed in a frame or on a small table easel.

If you wish to bid on this painting, visit my eBay auctions:

LARGE CALIFORNIA IMPRESSIONIST PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

ARTISTS: This Saturday morning I’m planning a special PLEIN AIR workshop on HOW TO PAINT BIG, BOLD & FREE on location. Email me for details if you’re interested in attending.

I’ll show how to use a large canvas and pull off a winner every time, with impact and flair.

Just being able to cover a big canvas on location is part of the issue. Especially when the light keeps changing. I’ll show you what I do about that.

Another thing is how to paint things like grasses, trees and foliage where it’s so easy to get bogged down with detail. I’ll show you how to keep it fresh and lively, and still make it convincing.

It might be worth it even if you plan to just come and watch.

“FOOTHILLS AND EUCALYPTUS” is a 24x36 inch original oil painting. Inquiries are welcome tombrownstudio@cox.net

EVENING LIGHT BY TOM BROWN

This painting is SOLD

The world is at peace. A flock of birds silently heads home as the sun says farewell.

Subtleties are the essence of this little jewel. No bold brushwork. No brilliant colors. A soft restful feeling was my goal here.

I hope this brings you a sense of peace. If so, I’ve accomplished my goal. Thanks for looking.

CLOUD WATCHING BY TOM BROWN

SOLD

Remember watching clouds when you were a small child? And spotting shapes that looked like wonderful imaginary things. I’ve never gotten over that fascination with cloud watching.

Yesterday I mentioned that playing with my paints is like therapy; a way to find peace and contentment. The noise and hurry of daily life is put aside and for a time the world stands still.

This is another painting that brought me that sense of escape. I call this one “CLOUD WATCHING.”

I hope you feel a little better for having seen it.

SMALL BOAT BY TOM BROWN

Want to paint with me this Saturday morning?

I’m conducting a special plein air workshop at a quiet harbor in Newport Beach, California.

I’ll demonstrate a new technique for painting complex harbor scenes in simple step-by-step layers. It’s an easy technique ANYONE can use to guarantee a beautiful painting. And you can use this same technique for other subjects too.

It’s like a little painting holiday to get inspired. And you’ll enjoy a pleasant morning in the fresh air with other artists. It’s going to be fun!

Email for details if you would like to join us. tombrownstudio@cox.net

THE SILVER LINING BY TOM BROWN

SOLD

My paint box was set up in 60 seconds when I saw these cloud halos. I knew there was no time to spare.

Clouds move quickly and having a paint box that sets up instantly makes it easier to focus on the task at hand.

The second critical thing is being able to handle colors quickly and accurately.

Colors are your vocabulary in the language of painting. If you want to be truly “fluent” in expressing yourself with your paints, you need to mix accurate colors without hesitation.

Then it all comes together like magic, and the picture seems to paint itself.

LARGE PEACEFUL LANDSCAPE BY TOM BROWN

SOLD

Can you remember when you were small, watching reflections in water?

Pretty colors wiggled and danced like magic. A shape would pull away to the side, then pop right back like a magnet.

Everything else was forgotten for the moment. The dancing reflections were all that existed.

Wonderful memories like those are the real subject of this painting. I hope it brings warm and peaceful feelings to your day. Thanks for looking.

EGGS AND MORE EGGS BY TOM BROWN

SOLD

I love freckles, even on eggs. Speckled farm fresh eggs always catch my eye, and they’re a colorful contrast to pure white eggs.

Which do you prefer? I like them both together.

This painting also suggests that age-old question, “Which came first?” And so that became the title.

ROAD, TREES, SKY AND MORE BY TOM BROWN

SOLD Nature tempts the eye with a million bits of information. But I want to express my emotional reaction to the experience.

The invigorating smell of fresh air. The comforting warmth of sun on skin. The feeling of freedom in an open space far from hurry, worry or stress. Things the camera can never record.

“FEELING THE MOMENT” is a 6x6 inch palette knife painting created in the middle of a deserted lane while enjoying the beauty of blue skies and balmy breezes. I welcome your reactions or comments. tombrownstudio@cox.net

In paintings like the one shown above I like to look for the abstract patterns in nature. This abstract pattern forms a strong foundation for the painting. “BESIDE THE QUIET POND” is a 6x6 inch plein air original oil painting.

URBAN PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

SOLD
The texture of the city has a magnetic pull that draws you in. With a romantic grittiness that’s seductive in its own way. I tried to capture that feeling in this little gutsy little palette knife piece.

I wanted to capture the feeling of the concrete and the buzz of the city. Colors here are grayer, more muted than the country landscapes I often paint.

It’s always a delicate balance. I wanted to include exactly the right amount of information to describe the setting, but avoid overworking it with too much detail.

I was pleased with the result. I call this 6x6 inch oil painting “HUM OF THE CITY.” As always, comments are welcome. tombrownstudio@cox.net

SKY PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

This painting is SOLD

I love, love, LOVE painting with a palette knife. The delicious juiciness of colors swirling together and dancing across the painting. Luscious strokes that add a spark of magic all their own. It’s always a balancing act. Putting in JUST enough information to describe what I feel, but not so much that it kills the spirit of the piece. I think I pulled it all together in this 6x6 inch oil named “SKY MAGIC” Let me know if you agree. tombrownstudio@cox.net

LARGE FREEWAY PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

This piece is different than my usual blog paintings. I realize it’s not for everyone. But I’d been wanting to paint this for quite awhile and finally took the time.

The large easel that I used for most of my Plein Air TV shows was perfect for this, since this canvas is larger than I normally use on-site. I chose a comfortable vantage point beneath the 405 freeway at Culver and brought along a cup of Starbuck’s for inspiration.

I kept this almost abstract in design, to support the “edgy” urban look I wanted to capture. In the right home this one will make a strong statement. I call this 12x16 inch oil painting “CITY SOUNDS”. Thanks for looking, and have a day filled with sunshine. As always, comments are welcome: tombrownstudio@cox.net
