BEAUTY IS WHERE YOU FIND IT, PLEIN AIR by TOM BROWN

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject. That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (plein air) so interesting to me. There are always new and interesting things to be discovered and painted.
There’s also the bonus of listening to the birds in the trees, and feeling the balmy breeze and the warmth of the sun on my shoulders. These are experiences I just don’t get when painting in the studio.
I think these feelings seem to come through and become part of the painting itself. Maybe that’s part of the popularity of plein air painting. It lends a sense of authenticity to the paintings when they’re done on site working directly from the inspiration of nature.
Even when the subject is something as ordinary as an untended palm tree and dilapidated storage shed. Beauty truly IS where you find it.
