CALIFORNIA IMPRESSIONIST PLEIN AIR by TOM BROWN
Paintings that are created outdoors directly from the inspiration of nature are like bringing a breath of fresh air and sunshine into your home.
And painting outdoors is exhilarating. I tell my plein air students to look for the magic and keep it simple. And that’s what I did here.
My principle goal was to capture the energy and excitement I felt. I used thick, juicy strokes of rich colorful oil paints to create additional interest and texture on the surface of the painting as I worked.
And my favorite pochade box helped too. It set up instantly so I could dive right in when I spotted this. No wasted effort; it’s light, travels easily, and safely carries my painting and palette of wet paints. I was already painting within the first few minutes.
