PAINTING WITH A PALETTE KNIFE by TOM BROWN

One of the things I love about painting with the knife is how quick and easy it is to set up. There are no solvents or brushes to deal with. I just open my pochade box and start painting. Cleanup is easy too; when I’m done I just wipe the knife and cleanup is complete.

I also love the bold, clean color the knife delivers to the surface. It always makes a powerful statement. It’s a great way to capture what inspired me while the idea is fresh. I think that comes through in the painting too. This painting is a good example of that.

BTW, lots of you have asked about the pochade paint box I use. My all-time favorite is the one shown below. It holds my wet palette of paints and my painting while I work and while I travel to and from a location. It clips onto any standard camera tripod. It’s very lightweight but very durable; it can really take a beating without damage. And it only cost about $20.

By the way I appreciate all the emails everyone has been sending, but I don’t carry a cell phone when I’m painting out on locations like this so you won’t be able to reach me then. But I always answer emails a.s.a.p. when I’m back on the computer, so feel free to email me any time with questions or comments.
