“THE MORNING DRIVE”

This was painted on location while teaching a recent plein air workshop. The photo shows the camera’s version for comparison with my artistic interpretation. I wanted to capture my emotional reaction to the overall scene rather than simply recording endless details.

You will notice that I eliminated many elements such as light posts and signs that I felt did not contribute to the feeling I wanted to capture. And I used bold strokes of thick, juicy oil paint to depict the massive sweep of the freeway structure and roadway. I deliberately kept the colors muted, using very subtle grays mixed from my usual spectrum of pigments.
