Want to know one of my secrets to painting better pictures?
Work out your
composition first with a quick value-mass sketch. (Not a careful line
drawing, but a value mass study.*)
It takes only
moments and it saves loads of time later. A sketch done this way lets you see
how the big shapes of tonal value & color work together in the composition
before you go too far.
I teach this in my
live workshops, especially plein air
workshops where it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the amount of detail nature
shows us.
A number of my students
asked me to make a video about this so everybody could benefit. And now you can download
that video today. In the video I’ll show you how I do this type of
value-mass sketch.
In the video you’ll
watch me use *value-mass sketching to
explore several designs for the painting shown here before touching brush
to canvas. And then you’ll see how the
painting developed based on the sketch I liked best.
The video even
includes a small gallery of other subjects with their preliminary
value-mass sketches so you can see how it applies to a variety of compositions
and ideas.
Thanks for looking.
