A FEW IDEAS ABOUT PLEIN AIR PAINTING …
The
color and light were the things I wanted to capture, and I had only a few
minutes to do it.
So I plunged in with no drawing at all and just started pushing paint around. Big shapes of color and value. Bam! Bam! Bam! Gitterdone!
Check the photo below and you’ll see it’s not technically accurate but that doesn’t matter; I caught the FEELING I was after.
I’m sharing this for all the artists who are afraid to try their hand at plein air painting, worried about perfect drawing or being able to paint a timeless masterpiece.
Sometimes it isn’t about that; sometimes what’s more important is being able to record your experience of the moment. If nobody likes it, that’s okay. Just be bold; take chances, and be willing to fail. That’s where the fun is.
One advantage of working small is you can get it done fast. This study was done on cardboard and measures about 6 ½ by 5 inches. It took less than 20 minutes start to finish.
So if you’ve been thinking about taking your paints outdoors, stop putting it off. Just grab your gear and go HAVE SOME FUN. Tom Brown
