This is a monochromatic painting of the unique variety of
cypress growing along the coast in Pacific Grove, California. These trees have
interestingly-shaped trunks resulting from effects of the wind and sea. I used
thin washes of oil paints on a canvas that I had previously toned gray
(grisaille). I had initially intended to use this as an underpainting, and
apply thick opaque layers of oils over this rendering. But when I saw the
crisp, contemporary look that resulted at this stage I decided to leave it
as-is. I felt further efforts would only diminish it. I hope you like it.
