Trying new subject matter keeps me fresh. And it’s exciting.
I’ve been drawing and painting since I was a kid, and to avoid becoming stale I like to try different subject matter occasionally.
Like this. I think this is the first giraffe I’ve ever painted.
I’m known for my plein air paintings. My TV show was always filmed on location and I have taught many plein air workshops.
I paint outside at every opportunity. I also love painting figures, portraits, and still life compositions.
But painting fresh new subject matter like this forces me to look at things much more closely than usual. It helps me loosen up and find ways to pump extra life into all my subjects. And it’s great fun!
I hope you can see the joy I felt when painting this one.
Thanks for looking.
