HOW I PAINT ON A TONED PANEL: CHERRY CHEESECAKE

I thought I would post something a bit different today for all my artist friends out there who have been following my recent blogs. This is a step-by-step demonstration of how I painted the cherry cheesecake shown above.

When working on a toned surface like this, my approach is different than working on a white ground. Since the middle value is already established, I begin by working the two ends of the value scale simultaneously.

In steps 1 and 2 you can see that after sketching the big shapes I blocked in color and value for the lightest and darkest tones right away. This gives me a good feel for the spectrum of values I’ll be using.

Next I begin to establish the other colors to be used and guarantee they work together. In steps 3 and 4 the cherries are brought near completion and the leaves are indicated to give me a better feel for how these reds and greens will work with the rest of the painting. Then I can move ahead confidently.

In step 5 leaves are added behind the dessert and the shadow of the cheesecake is indicated on the plate. In step 6 the plate itself is taken to finish, and a gold edge is added to it. Finally, the foreground and background will be added to complete the painting. Scroll up to see the finished painting or click the headline to bid on eBay ($45, with no reserve).

Since I was painting in a busy urban area I used my compact “laptop” paintbox and worked in the comfort of my car. I thought that would help avoid interruptions. I was wrong.

A local gentleman parked his shopping cart full of worldly possessions next to my car and informed me that he and his one-eyed dog would hang out and keep people from bothering me. As I painted he kept up a running monologue and educated me about everything there is to know in life. True to his word, he DID keep other people from bothering me.

My new-found best friend spotted my camera and even offered to shoot my photo in case I “became famous.” When I finished I thanked him with a bit of cash to buy a good meal or whatever he and his dog needed and we parted, each a bit richer for the experience.

I spotted this couple at a local Starbucks. The gentleman reminded me of Papa Hemingway, beard and all. I immediately knew I wanted to paint him and I grabbed one of my custom-designed paintboxes from the car -- a compact kit that looks similar to a small laptop computer.

I have found that I can work with this paintbox in my lap while sitting at an outdoor cafe and no one pays any attention. I appear to be just another laptopper working on the internet while having coffee. (I’m including a photo of my “laptop” kit for the benefit of other artists who check my blog.) I was in luck and this couple remained virtually motionless the entire time I painted this picture. I am pleased with how it turned out.

This one is truly unique; it’s a picture within a picture. I was having my morning coffee and making notes for the day’s activities when I realized that the coffee and notepad made a great composition. I grabbed another pad and sketched it before opening my paintbox. When I began the actual painting, I used the pad with the sketch. So this painting now shows a sketch of itself within the painting. Confusing? Maybe, but this is definitely one of a kind and a real conversation starter.

This painting shows the cliffs overlooking the ocean at Corona Del Mar, California. I conduct plein air workshops on weekends, and this was done during my workshop this past weekend.

Early in the morning the sky was a very relaxing silvery gray, creating muted colors throughout the entire scene. I usually paint with stronger color, but there is something very special and serene about this one. I really like; I hope you do too.
