Half Dome in Yosemite National Park is a national landmark. I did this 6x8-inch painting as a study for a larger studio piece awhile back. I liked the way it turned out and it’s been living on my studio wall until now. Today I decided to put it on eBay and let it find a new home.

LARGE TRUCK PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

This past weekend I did a workshop on how to approach successful plein air paintings done on larger canvases than usual. It got me in the mood to work a bit larger on this studio painting as well.

This painting of an antique farm truck was done from a photo supplied by a good friend and fellow artist.

It’s done on a 20x16-inch canvas panel. And despite the size I wanted to incorporate powerful brush technique while maintaining the integrity of the details in the photo. I’m including a few detail photos to show the brush technique I used.

I was pleased with the results. I hope you like it too.

BurmaShave signs added a special thrill to long car trips when I was young.

We kids would sit in the back seat eagerly anticipating the next series of these little signs along the edge of the road, which had a rhyme that always ended with the words “Burma Shave.”

That advertising campaign finally ended in the early 60s. So if it’s new to you, you might want to Google it and enjoy a drive through the past.

As I painted this scene not far from my home I recalled the excitement of watching for those little red signs along the road and I decided to add them to this painting. You need to look closely to see them in the foreground.

Apart from that, this is exactly how this scene actually looked. I painted this during a plein air class I conducted for other artists. For the class it was a lesson in how to depict aerial perspective, but for me it was a trip down memory lane.
