TOPSIDER SHOES WITH A STORY by TOM BROWN
eBay Auction, CLICK HERE to bid
Being able to find the beauty in commonplace things opens
up new vistas of enjoyment in life. This is a pair of well-worn Topsiders. Not
particularly noteworthy in themselves. But I liked the way the light was
falling on them, with the shadows linking together the large shapes of this
simple composition. And that was the starting point.
Then I considered how I could use color creatively to add
a bit more interest; a bit more subtle in one place, a bit bolder in another.
And suddenly a painting was born.
I am showing a photo of the actual shoes here for
comparison with my interpretation. Other artists often tell me that they find
it interesting when they can see a photo of the actual subject like this along
with my painting of it.
Sometimes the everyday things we often overlook can
suddenly catch our eye and stand out as worthy of recognition. I was pleased
with this piece and hope you share my appreciation of simple things like this.
Thanks for looking and have an eye-opening day.

This is another painting I created as I was filmed for a TV show that I hosted. Each episode was filmed at a different location (en plein air) as I captured the scene on canvas. I exhibited this as one of the pieces in a solo show of my work at the Irvine Fine Arts Center awhile ago, and held it back for my own collection until now. I was very pleased with the way this one turned out and decided to keep it at the time. It's been hanging on my wall at home until now. I've finally decided to let it find a new home, so I'm offering it here at a price anyone can afford.

I always enjoy getting out in
the fresh air and painting directly from the inspiration of Nature. It always
seems to bring that certain "something extra" to the painting. The
painting has more life, and a feeling of the real place and moment in time. You
can almost smell the fresh sweet air and feel the warmth of sunlight on your
shoulders.

$1 ORIGINAL OIL, VENICE CANAL, GONDOLA by TOM BROWN
$1 auction, CLICK HERE to bid
Occasionally I like to explore a number of small
studies for a painting before beginning a larger canvas. These small studies
help me to organize my thoughts as to composition, values, and color usage.
That was the case here. I actually did this painting on
paper, using the same oil paints that I use on canvas. This was the best of
several composition studies I did and I used it as the basis for a larger
painting done at a later date.
When this study was dry I mounted it on a firm backing
board for easy framing, and trimmed it out to the 4x4 overall size you see
here. The overall dimensions include the white border around the painted area.
In the right frame this little gem will really bring a touch of life to a room.
I have put this up
for auction on eBay with a $1 starting bid. Click the link above for the
auction.

$1 MINIATURE LANDSCAPE STUDY, ORIGINAL OIL by TOM BROWN

Occasionally when painting on location (en plein air)
I like to explore a number of small studies for a landscape before
beginning a larger canvas. These small studies help me to organize my thoughts
as to composition, values, and color usage. That was the case here.
I actually did this painting on paper, using the same oil
paints that I use on canvas. This was the best of several composition studies I
did that day, and I used it as the basis for a larger painting that was done
that day on location.
This study served me well, and I completed a very
satisfying 12x16 inch canvas based on this study. The larger painting was
purchased right off the easel by one of the onlookers watching me paint that
day. But I also liked this small study very much. It's like a little gem with
lots of sparkle, and I kept it for myself.
When this small study was dry I mounted it on a firm
backing board for easy framing, and trimmed it out to the 4x4 overall size you
see here. The overall dimensions include the white border around the painted
area. In the right frame this little gem will really bring a touch of life to a
