I’m often asked what kind of paper I use for sketchbook studies done with oils. This was done on 138 lb. Canson Mixed Media paper, which is described as ideal for wet and dry media. And when I get a “keeper” like this little gem I can pop it into a nice frame and it will look great on any wall. I generally start with a quick value sketch using a 6b pencil, then paint directly on that sketch with oils. That’s how this one was done. I’m showing a photo of the sketch taken before I added oil colors. In the initial sketch you can also see that I had initially considered adding more background. Then I realized it would make a stronger composition if I cropped more closely to the trees and house. That’s one of the reasons I often like to begin with small studies before proceeding further.
I’ve always found it easier to be bold & take chances when I work on a surface that isn’t “precious.” Doing studies with oils on paper or cardboard is ideal, because if I have a failure I feel no remorse about trashing it. This early morning fog study is a good example. It’s far from perfect, but it was great fun to just grab a brush and go with the flow. And for me, that’s what painting is all about: having fun. Enjoying the beauty of the world around me and sketching or playing with my paints. (This piece is 6x7 inches, oils/cardboard.)
This one is a bit looser than many of my paintings. The abstract shapes, light and color of the moment caught my eye and I simply couldn’t pass this up. I used a palette knife to capture the bold, dramatic shapes that caught my eye. And when I felt I had captured the essence of it, I stopped. More detail would have weakened it and I liked the strength of these loosely painted strokes. Hope you like it too. I am offering this painting at a SPECIAL FLASH SALE price for a very short time. A quick sketch at the edge of a local farm. 6x8 oil/paper. Quick oil studies on paper help me loosen up, and capture the essence of a subject without overthinking it. You can see more of my finished work here.
