“LAST LIGHT” 6x8 INCH ORIGINAL PLEIN AIR OIL PAINTING BY TOM BROWN To purchase this email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net
The surprising colors that occur in the sky at sunset always excite me. This is one of my favorite times to be outdoors with my paints. In this plein air painting you can see the last rays of sunlight grazing the foreground trees and creating a golden glow on the distant foothills. I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time – with my paints handy! Enjoy the view.
“HOUSE WITH A VIEW” 6x8 INCH ORIGINAL PLEIN AIR OIL PAINTING BY TOM BROWN SOLD
This was another demo I painted while teaching a Plein Air Workshop for an Art League on Saturday. I was inspired by the fantastic view enjoyed by the residents in this house that overlooks the bay.
I photographed step-by-step progress as the painting developed, then included those photos with follow-up notes to all the participants after the workshop.

“GOLDEN CLIFFS ACROSS THE BAY” Approximately 5x7 INCH ORIGINAL PLEIN AIR OIL PAINTING BY TOM BROWN
This was my first demo of the day while teaching a Plein Air Workshop for an Art League on Saturday. It is a vignette in oils on canvas, done as a study to demonstrate how to approach the scene to create an eye-catching painting.
Blocking in interesting shapes of value and color masses was the initial step. Then working with the sculptural thickness of the paint itself on the canvas. This helps to communicate the form and texture of the golden cliffs across the bay. Take a look at the detail image for a better look at the textural qualities of this little study.

"CITY SKY LIGHT" 8x10 INCH URBAN PLEIN AIR OIL PAINTING BY TOM BROWN SOLD
I am always inspired by the ever-changing light, colors and cloud patterns in the sky. Especially at sunset. This was no exception.
I decided to include only enough landscape to establish the setting, but feature the sky itself as the focal point. Let me know what you think of this one. And if you would like to own it at pre-gallery prices email me at tombrownstudio@cox.net.

"ABANDONED" 5x7 INCH ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING BY TOM BROWN To purchase this painting email tombrownstudio@cox.net
I've painted this derelict building in the past, but couldn't resist capturing it one more time while I was in the area and had my pochade paintbox handy. To paint this picture I used my palette knife, which results in very bold and dynamic statements of color and value. It adds a lot of punch to small paintings like this.
I enjoy switching from painting with a brush to working exclusively with a palette knife as I did this time. By varying the approach I find that it keeps my work fresher in each medium.
I love the colors in the scene, with the towering trees, the building tucked away beneath and the randomness of the foreground. Something about it speaks to me. Hope you like it, too.

"THE SUN DOESN'T WAIT" 6x8 INCH PLEIN AIR SUNSET ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING BY TOM BROWN SOLD
Sunset is no time for timid painters. You either paint fast or you miss it. The sun doesn't wait and the dazzling display of color lasts very briefly and then it's gone forever.
I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, and now I've frozen this moment in time to be enjoyed at leisure. I hope you like it. If you'd like to own it, email me: tombrownstudio@cox.net

"A FINAL GLANCE" 7x5 INCH ORIGINAL PALETTE KNIFE OIL PAINTING BY TOM BROWN SOLD
This was my final painting of the mountains, trees and distant homes seen from the plein air workshop I conducted today. It offers a good example of the powerful impact that knife painting creates, which results in strong compositions that will stand the test of time.
I enjoy the bold, nearly abstract quality of palette knife oil paintings like this one. Painting with a knife prohibits the inclusion of extraneous detail and forces the artist to reduce the subject to its essence. I believe this creates more powerful compositions that stand the test of time.

"THE TREASURE ISLAND STORY" 7x5 INCH PLEIN AIR ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING BY TOM BROWN
This painting has an interesting story involving a near drowning.
Last weekend I conducted a plein air workshop where we painted from atop cliffs overlooking a spot known as "Treasure Island" in Southern California.
Suddenly we heard panicked cries for help from a diver who was swimming in the bay below us. We were too far away to help, but to our relief we watched several strong swimmers race to the rescue of the troubled diver.
It all ended well, and it created some memorable moments during our plein air workshop.
This painting is currently available at "pre-gallery" pricing. Email for details: tombrownstudio@cox.net
"MORNING LIGHT" 7x5 INCH ORIGINAL PLEIN AIR OIL PAINTING BY TOM BROWN
What a fun way to start the day. The early morning light made this scene glow with a peachy color and I just HAD to capture that feeling in a painting. I popped open my custom paintbox and went to work. (Click the type above this image to watch a video about this perfect little paintbox.)
All was quiet except for a lone construction worker across the street and I painted with no interruptions. It was a blissful way to begin the day.
At the finish of the painting I decided to include the traffic cone in front of the truck. It added a nice spot of color and uniqueness to the painting.

"THE RED MAILBOX" 4x4 INCH ORIGINAL PALETTE KNIFE OIL PAINTING BY TOM BROWN
I enjoy the nearly abstract quality of small palette knife paintings like this. Painting with a knife prohibits excessive detail. It forces an artist to reduce the subject to its essence.
Yet a painting even this small can hold surprises. Like the red mailbox at the side of the road. And the power lines slicing through the trees. (Click the image for a larger view.)
I painted this purely for self-indulgence, and I hope you find it interesting too. Email if you'd like to own this little jewel at a very affordable price. tombrownstudio@cox.net
"A MOMENT TO REMEMBER" 6x8 INCH ORIGINAL PLEIN AIR OIL PAINTING BY TOM BROWN SOLD
This little jewel is about mood and atmosphere. A peach glow spreads across the sky, made softer by a gentle mist in the sweet morning air. It is a moment of peaceful stillness before the world awakens. It is a moment to remember.
"ROSE'S ROSE GARDEN" 5x7 INCH ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING BY TOM BROWN SOLD
Sometimes the subject chooses the artist, like this painting that was just waiting to happen. How could I resist this one? A quiet, secluded home on a pleasant sunny afternoon. A white picket fence and a colorful flower garden. It practically painted itself.
If you would like this little jewel to grace your walls, email for details: tombrownstudio@cox.net. It is very affordably priced.
