PLEIN AIR PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“TOP OF THE WORLD”
8x6 inch Plein Air Impressionist
Original Oil Painting by Tom Brown

SOLD

Artists participating my plein air workshop met at this stunning location Saturday morning. This was the view in early morning light, which I painted as a demonstration for the group. Of particular interest was the sense of distance that I wanted to capture in this piece.

The hills and valleys seemed to roll on forever, disappearing into the mountains on the far horizon. I was quite pleased with this plein air painting.

YELLOW HOUSE AND BLUE SKY PLEIN AIR PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“YELLOW HOUSE AND BLUE SKIES”
8x6 inch Plein Air Impressionist
Original Oil Painting by Tom Brown

This is another painting done during a Plein Air workshop I conducted last weekend. The rains had ended just in time, but I had moved the workshop to an alternate location where we could have painted outdoors under shelter if the rains had continued.

This is one of the charming views available to us at that location. If you would like this painting for your wall, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

VENICE CANAL, LARGE ORIGINAL OIL by TOM BROWN

“MEMORIES OF VENICE”
12x16 inch Impressionist
Oil Painting by Tom Brown

Venice has a very unique flavor that is unforgettable. The gondolas in canals. The small footbridges connecting the narrow, winding streets. The interesting and varied architectural detail.

This piece was a pleasure to paint, and it brings back fond memories. If you would like this painting for your wall, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

TOM BROWN / 8X10 ONION STILL LIFE PAINTING

“RED TWIST TIE”
8x10 inch painting by Tom Brown

This is another of my paintings that was merely an excuse to play with my paints. The fresh onions simply happened to be handy, and I couldn’t resist the opportunity to immortalize them in oils. I guess this one is for onion lovers.

“A SLICE OF SUNSHINE”

This painting is simply about color and light. The subject matter is almost incidental. It was merely an excuse to play with my paints after I set up this still life on the back patio outdoors.

I hope you like it, and I thank you for looking.

TOM BROWN / 8X10 IMPRESSIONIST LANDSCAPE PAINTING

“TUCKED AWAY”
8x10 inch California impressionist
plein air oil painting by Tom Brown

SOLD
A little about myself for those new to following my blog:

I’m a California Impressionist Plein Air painter, and I host a TV Art Instruction show where I teach studio oil painting and plein air painting in the Impressionist style.

This is one of my plein air paintings created on location, directly from nature. They are currently being offered on my blog at very affordable prices until I resume gallery affiliations later this year. If you are interested in purchasing this, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

My Impressionist plein air landscapes, still life compositions, portraits and figure paintings have been represented through prominent galleries for more than 20 years.

My paintings are in corporate collections including the City of Irvine, Sears, Standard Oil, and Coca Cola. My work is often seen in leading art publications like Southwest Art, Art & Antiques, American Art Review, American Art Collector, Art Calendar and others.

I am a former president of the Orange Art Association and past member of the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association and Southern California Plein Air Painters Association.

On my Daily Painter blog I offer affordable small original oil paintings to introduce my work to new and ongoing collectors. Much of my work these days is done on a private commission basis, and I welcome inquiries. Thanks for looking.

TOM BROWN / 8X10 IMPRESSIONIST LANDSCAPE PAINTING

“LIVING OFF THE GRID”
8x10 inch painting
by Tom Brown
SOLD

Some individuals find alternate solutions to the hectic pace of everyday life and create a more relaxed environment for themselves. This is a perfect example.

Far from the frenetic pace of urban life. Acres of land around their home to serve as a buffer to the “outside world.” They are living life by their own rules, off the grid.

TOM BROWN LARGE IMPRESSIONIST SUNSET LANDSCAPE

“MAGIC HOUR”
18x24 inch California Impressionist
original oil painting by Tom Brown
SOLD

This is a large studio painting done from a 6x8-inch plein air study done on location. The study appeared on my blog in early October of last year, and it now hangs on my studio wall.

I had often thought of using the study as the basis for a larger studio piece and finally found the time to create this 18x24-inch painting.

One of the keys to successfully creating a large painting from a smaller study is to retain the freshness of the original study when working in a much larger size.

I felt I accomplished that goal in this painting. If you click on the detail image you can see how I kept a loose, fresh feeling to the brushwork even though this is a fairly large canvas.

This was originally slated for a gallery later this year but I changed my mind and decided to let it go to a local artist who I felt would give it a good home.

If you like it, feel free to email me with your comments: tombrownstudio@cox.net

Thanks for looking.

TOM BROWN / LARGE BARN PAINTING

“A LOOK BACK IN TIME”
18x24 inch acrylic painting
by Tom Brown

This painting was done many years ago at a time when I favored a great amount of detail in my paintings. The degree of looseness or tightness used in the brush strokes is a very personal issue, and I thought it may be of interest to my followers to see this painting of a Midwestern barn done in the distant past.

In the early years of my art career I favored an almost photo-realistic approach in my paintings. In the detail image here you can see that I paid a lot of attention to tiny details like the texture of glass compared with wood grain.

I even accentuated minute details like the highlight on the shard of broken glass and how the cross-cut texture of wood used for the window frame differs from the rough-hewn barn siding.

Over the years my taste and artistic development evolved. Today I favor a more emotionally charged brush stroke.

I feel the type of stroke I use today more clearly communicates the heart and soul of what I want to express in my work. Both styles are valid. It is purely a matter of subjective interpretation for the individual artist.

Let me know if you found this interesting. It’s a little glimpse into the distant past.

TOM BROWN PLEIN AIR LANDSCAPE PAINTING

“WIDE OPEN SPACES”
6x8 inch California Impressionist
plein air oil painting by Tom Brown

Not far from my home these beautiful foot hills and mountain ranges are still unspoiled by developers.

Open farmland and big skies give the sense of freedom rarely experienced in today’s claustrophobic world. What better way to celebrate it than to grab my paints and capture it in oils.

Little jewels like this record the moment more truly than a camera, and preserve this vista for the future when inroads of development will eventually alter it beyond recognition.

BOAT, LARGE IMPRESSIONIST PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“NOW YOU SEE IT, NOW YOU DON’T”
12x16 inch California Impressionist
original oil painting by Tom Brown

Like a magician I transformed a fiberglass boat into a more charming wood boat for this painting. It merely took a wave of my magic paintbrush.

In the photo you can see that everything was picture perfect when I came upon it, except for the fiberglass boat hidden beneath trees at water’s edge.

Fiberglass may be more durable than wood but I felt an old fashioned wood boat fit the picture better. Fortunately artists are like magicians. They can move mountains. Or transform boats. I hope you like it.

As always, thanks for looking. I wish you a day of peace and serenity. Let me know if you’d like this little piece of magic for your wall: tombrownstudio@cox.net

TOM BROWN PLEIN AIR LANDSCAPE

“THE GUARDIAN”
6x8 inch California Impressionist
plein air oil painting by Tom Brown
SOLD

This towering tree appeared to stand guard over an abandoned barn I found while exploring farm country. Simple scenes of peacefulness like this always appeal to me.

Scenes like this offer a momentary escape from the hectic pace of our world. It’s like a glimpse into the past when life was lived at a slower pace, before cell phones, computers and the continual assault of stressful news updates.

Thanks for looking, and if you’re interested in this little jewel, email me for purchasing details: tombrownstudio@cox.net

This painting is a little jewel that will bring a moment of peace and serenity to your heart and home if it finds a place on your wall.

SUNSET LANDSCAPE, TOM BROWN PLEIN AIR PAINTING

“A MOMENT OF PASSION”
6x8 inch California Impressionist
plein air oil painting by Tom Brown
SOLD

The last rays of golden sunlight swept across the distant hills and warmed the colors of the trees at the edge of this farm. The sky was a mix of subtle hues that made my heart beat faster. This is what I wanted to capture; the emotion of the moment! Feelings. Life. Passion.

My paintings are about the spirit of the subject rather than fussy details. I paint what moves me when I encounter a scene, instead of merely recording dry, lifeless facts.

I think I caught that here – the emotional essence of the moment. I hope it brings a moment of joy to your day too.

TOM BROWN PLEIN AIR SUNSET IMPRESSIONIST OIL PAINTING

“PAINT FAST OR STAY HOME”
6x8 inch California Impressionist
plein air oil painting by Tom Brown
SOLD

The title for this painting was inspired by a friend’s comment as we captured this sunset in oils. Color and light change very quickly during a sunset like this, and there is no time for hesitation. I couldn’t improve on his comment and decided to name the painting accordingly. Enjoy the moment.

Galleries nationwide will once again be showing my paintings later this year. I am currently creating a series of large works for gallery exhibition, in addition to the smaller plein air paintings like this.

Until I resume gallery affiliations I can still offer my work at “pre-gallery” prices. If this one speaks to you, email me for purchasing details: tombrownstudio@cox.net

As always, thanks for looking. And keep an eye on this blog for details about the book of my work that will be available later this year, too.

An artist's interpretation of the subject can lend a greater degree of interest to an otherwise ordinary scene. In this particular piece colors have been enhanced, portions of the scene have been altered, and even the surface texture of the canvas comes into play.

The way an artist interprets the subject can turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. I hope you like what I have done here. Thanks for looking.

And a big thanks to all my loyal collectors, students and followers of this blog who have made last year such a wonderful year for me. I wish you all an even better 2010.

PLEIN AIR IMPRESSIONIST OIL PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“MORNING FOG”
8x10 inch Impressionist
plein air oil painting by Tom Brown
To purchase this painting email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

Fog muffled the early morning sounds and seemed to cast a gauzy veil over the distant trees. It provided a moment of peace before the world awoke. I was happy to be there to revel in the moment and record the sense of it on canvas.

Paintings that are created on location directly from nature are able to capture the feelings, mood and spirit of the moment.

By the way, a book of my paintings will be available later this year. It will feature a variety of my small plein air work as well as larger studio pieces that I am currently preparing for galleries. Stay tuned for more information.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! And a special thanks to all my loyal collectors, students and followers of this blog.

PLEIN AIR IMPRESSIONIST OIL PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“SIMPLE BEAUTY”
6x8 inch Impressionist
plein air oil painting by Tom Brown
To purchase this painting email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

I continue to enjoy painting small plein air studies directly from nature in addition to working on a series of larger studio works for gallery exhibitions later this year. Sometimes I use these small plein air pieces as the basis for the large studio paintings.

In an earlier post I discussed how plein air paintings ring true to nature more than photos or imagination. Photos are notably inadequate for capturing the true range of color that the artist’s eye can observe on location.

That is one of the reasons plein air paintings are valued so highly. They sparkle with life like little jewels and capture the feelings, mood and spirit of the moment. I feel that is the case with this little treasure. I hope you agree.

A book of my paintings will also be available later this year, which will feature a variety of my paintings including small plein air work as well as larger studio pieces. Stay tuned for more information.

Plein air paintings ring true to nature more than photos or imagination. Photos are notably inadequate for capturing the true range of color that the artist’s eye can observe on location.

That is one of the reasons plein air paintings are valued so highly. They sparkle with life like little jewels and capture the feelings, mood and spirit of the moment.

In the studio I sometimes work from these small plein air paintings to create larger gallery-sized canvases. This has long been a common practice among master painters like Kevin Macpherson and Scott Christensen as well.

I am in the process of creating a series of larger works for gallery exhibitions later this year, and will sometimes use my small plein air pieces as the basis for some of them.

In the coming months you will see some of my larger paintings here, as well as more of my small plein air paintings.

RARE PLEIN AIR NEW YEAR’S EVE BLUE MOON by TOM BROWN

“NEW YEAR’S EVE BLUE MOON, 2009”
8x10 inch Impressionist
plein air oil painting by Tom Brown
To purchase this painting email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net
SOLD

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

This is a true Plein Air painting of the “BLUE MOON” on New Year’s Eve, 2009. It was painted entirely on location at night, using my specially designed nocturne plein air kit.

A BLUE MOON occurs on New Year’s Eve only ONCE every 19 years, and I certainly didn’t want to miss this historic occasion. This is my final painting of 2009, and it’s especially meaningful because of the rarity of the event.

I painted this entire canvas outdoors on location, on New Year’s Eve. The moon was at this point in the sky fairly early in the night, so I was able to complete this painting and get back in time to properly ring in the New Year with champagne. We’re off to a great start!

Thanks for looking. I wish you a very Happy New Year!
