HAPPY HALLOWEEN FROM TOM BROWN

I couldn’t resist; I love painting pumpkins. This morning I decided to stay in the studio and paint this 6x6 inch pair of pumpkins just for fun. It will add a nice touch to the walls today and through Thanksgiving.

Thanks for looking, Tom Brown

PALM TREES, TOM BROWN PLEIN AIR ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING

While hiking in the California hills I came across these palm trees growing wild. A new "baby" was sprouting at the base of one of the larger trees and I decided the entire scene made an interesting composition. This painting is the result, painted entirely on location (en plein air, as they say). Enjoy!

HARBOR, BOAT, SEA GULLS, TOM BROWN PLEIN AIR ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING

The little boat was named "Gullible" and it seemed to be a fitting name when this flock of gulls found something tasty that was stored in the boat.

A wild feeding frenzy ensued. The air was filled with ear-piercing screeches as gulls vied for the best treat. I was painting at the edge of the harbor when this occurred, and I quickly painted this record of the experience.

The air seemed filled with a single massive blur of wings, and that's the feeling I tried to capture in this painting. Hope you like it.

TOM BROWN VIDEO and LARGE CALIFORNIA IMPRESSIONIST PLEIN AIR PAINTING

Colors sizzle in the late afternoon California sun. Golden light washes across the land as the sun nears the horizon, creating richer, more vibrant hues.

The artist's brush must move swiftly to capture these dramatic and fleeting effects, and I enjoyed the challenge. This painting was filmed as it was being created on location (en plein air), and the video is now on YouTube. Enjoy!

GREAT WHITE HERON, TOM BROWN PLEIN AIR PAINTING

TOM BROWN CALIFORNIA IMPRESSIONIST PLEIN AIR PAINTING

I painted this on location during a Plein Air Workshop I taught for other artists. Part of the lesson I wanted to teach was to look for simplicity and clean patterns of values and color in the scene. Then communicate that with a minimum of fuss, skipping unnecessary detail if it didn’t add to the quality of the statement. I think this painting achieved that objective. I hope you like it.

FIGURE SKETCH AND NEW VIDEO BY TOM BROWN

This customer had dozed off at an outdoor café, and I couldn’t resist a quick study of him.

I used my “stealth paint box” for this one. It’s an oil painting kit small enough to rest on my lap and it looks like a common laptop computer.

I can paint in peace because nobody notices me. I look like all the others surfing the net while they have their coffee. You can see it happening in my newest YouTube video.

This is a 5x7 inch original oil painting done on the spot. I call it “TAKING IT EASY” Click here to bid:

MALE FIGURE STUDY, CELL PHONE, TOM BROWN CONTEMPORARY URBAN PAINTING

I painted this figure study at an outdoor café. I couldn’t resist.

I began with a quick monochromatic lay-in, using thinned paint and a brush while this guy stood nearby. He was deep in conversation and totally unaware of me.

After he moved away I simply continued from memory and added a few color notes where they were needed. When I got to this point I felt it was finished.

I used the small custom-made paint box you’ve seen in many of my YouTube videos.

I rested the paint box in my lap as I painted. It looks like a laptop and it doesn’t attract any attention, leaving me free to paint people like this guy without anyone being aware.

This is a 5x7 inch original oil painting I call “HOW DO I GET THERE?”

AMERICANA, PLEIN AIR PALETTE KNIFE LANDSCAPE BY TOM BROWN

I painted this little jewel during a Plein Air workshop I conducted for other artists Saturday at a restful scenic spot outdoors in the warm sunshine.

This painting was done with a palette knife to achieve the bold painterly effects I wanted to capture. Using the knife this way for applying the paint results in a rich, juicy surface texture.

The painting is about the paint itself as much as the subject. I was very pleased with the results. Hope you like it too.

PEOPLE, CITY, CROWDS, TOM BROWN CONTEMPORARY URBAN LANDSCAPE

I love people-watching, especially in the heart of city activity.

Sometimes I sit at a sidewalk coffee shop and sketch or shoot photos of people passing by. Later I may use the sketches for studio paintings. Other times I open my small metal paint box and paint on the spot.

My paint box looks like a laptop and it doesn’t attract any attention, leaving me free to paint people nearby without anyone being aware.

NATURE TRAIL, PLEIN AIR LANDSCAPE BY TOM BROWN

The hectic pace of daily life falls away during a peaceful walk in Nature. And that’s the feeling I wanted to capture here.

I painted this on location using a palette knife rather than brushes. I always enjoy the bold, clean strokes that occur when using this painting tool. Enjoy the view and have a peaceful day.

AMERICANA, RETRO MOTEL BY TOM BROWN, CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPE

This is another little Mom ‘n’ Pop motel I discovered along a country back-road.

Whenever I come upon one of these treasures I like to sketch or paint it on the spot if time permits. They are icons of a past era, and I have a special fondness for them.

LAGUNA BEACH TOURISTS BY TOM BROWN

“LAGUNA BEACH TOURISTS” is an 8x8-inch original oil painting, ready to frame.

I painted this on the spot as tourists strolled past my easel. I felt it would be interesting to include a photo of the scene as well as a few steps during the painting process.

You can see my initial block-in of the key architectural shapes, then as individual tourists passed or paused I quickly indicated their position in the painting.

Finally I began to block in the important colors, and then took it to completion. I was very pleased with the result, and hope you like it too.
