I love creating these small paintings. They have a freshness that makes them really sparkle. And they look SO MUCH better in person than on-screen. I’ve just finished a series of large commissions, and have decided to take a break and do a series of these small pieces. Just for the pure pleasure of it. I’ll be posting more of them in the coming days. By the way, these make great Holiday gift ideas, in case you’re getting ready early this year.

PALM TREES, TOM BROWN PLEIN AIR ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING

While hiking in the California hills I came across these palm trees growing wild. A new "baby" was sprouting at the base of one of the larger trees and I decided the entire scene made an interesting composition. This painting is the result, painted entirely on location (en plein air, as they say). Enjoy!

This painting is a study in contrasts and it was a joy to paint. It has contrasts in dark and light values. In thick and thin areas of paint on the surface. In crisp and soft edges.

It has contrasts in vibrant and muted colors. In bold sweeping strokes contrasting with tiny detail strokes. In warm and cool color temperatures.

At the heart of it all, this is a very simple subject and composition. But it’s a cheerful little jewel that will add a bit of sparkle to any room.

In this painting I wanted to capture the sparkle of light shimmering across the bay. It was painted during the plein air workshop I taught Saturday at Newport Back Bay. It was a very windy day but the setting was perfect and we all had an enjoyable day painting in the fresh air.

About The Painting:
This miniature oil painting is another in my new series called “LITTLE TREASURES.” Each one is a small, highly affordable original oil painting celebrating the beauty of our world.

I live in Southern California and create many of these paintings on location using a compact metal paintbox that is completely self-contained. I simply open the box and paint, then close the lid and I’m packed to go. My wet palette and fresh painting are safely contained inside. The historic Mission in San Juan Capistrano is located in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. It is the home of the Swallows of Capistrano, who have returned to the Mission each year for centuries to nest and have their young.

Known as "The Jewel of the Missions," it was founded by Junipero Serra in 1776, and is the seventh of the 21 historic Spanish Missions. This painting shows the famous bell tower of the mission. Colorful bougainvillea and palm trees set off the graceful arches and stucco walls of the mission.

I happened upon this charming adobe at just the right time of day, when shadows from graceful palm trees were cast upon the stucco walls and red tile roof. I was raised in the Midwest and after living in California for many years I am still in awe of the breathtaking scenery on the coast; the palm trees swaying in the fresh ocean breeze, the surf lapping at the beach. To me it is truly a paradise.

Yesterday I took my paint box to a small park along the ocean and spotted this ironic scene. This young woman was completely absorbed in her laptop screen while oblivious to the incredible beauty around her. (Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder.)

I immediately set up my easel and set to work to record this moment on canvas. Surprisingly, she didn’t move the entire time I painted this picture and was still glued to the laptop screen when I packed my paints and left with this painting.
