AFFORDABLE 8x10 INCH IMPRESSIONIST PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“WHY DID THE SHADOW CROSS THE ROAD”
8x10 inch California impressionist
original oil painting by Tom Brown
SOLD

A quiet canyon road zigzags into the distance, passing beneath an old railroad bridge that is warmed by the late afternoon sun. Long shadows creep across the road, lending additional interest to the foreground.

Recently I created a number of plein air paintings on location in Santiago Canyon. This scene also spoke to me while I was exploring the area but I didn’t have time to paint it that day so I shot a photo.

The other evening I used that photo as the basis of this painting during an oil painting workshop I conducted. This painting has real charm and interesting surface texture. If you are interested in purchasing it, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

UNIQUE IMPRESSIONIST PLEIN AIR LANDSCAPE by TOM BROWN

“CUP ‘O’ CHINO”
5x7 inch California impressionist
plein air oil painting by Tom Brown

At the side of a remote stretch of road I spotted this drive-through coffee stand named “Cup ‘O’ Chino Expresso”. (Their spelling, not mine.)

How could I pass this up? I began with a quick thumbnail sketch to clarify my composition and lighting, then plunged into the plein air painting. I snapped a photo before leaving, because I’m sure there will be many who wouldn’t believe this was real.

LAGUNA CANYON PLEIN AIR LANDSCAPE by TOM BROWN

“BIG BEND, LAGUNA CANYON”
8x10 inch California impressionist
plein air oil painting by Tom Brown

Erosion on the canyon wall has revealed massive slabs of white rock, which creates a dramatic backdrop for this canyon composition.

I painted today’s picture while scouting locations for the Plein Air Workshop I will conduct which starts in a couple of weeks. This is one of the spots where we will paint during the workshop.

If you’re a Southern California artist you may want to join us. I’ll show how to simplify and capture the emotional content of a scene like this, including lessons on composition, color-mixing, brushwork and more. Email me for details if you are interested.

IMPRESSIONIST PLEIN AIR LANDSCAPE by TOM BROWN

“THE LURE OF THE OPEN ROAD”
6x8 inch California impressionist
plein air oil painting by Tom Brown

I love to explore deserted country roads. They always seem to beckon me to take one more hill or one more turn in the road to discover what I might find.

I keep my plein air painting kit in the car and often I can’t resist pulling over to capture the beauty of a scene like this in a painting.

Enjoy the scene and have a peaceful day.

If you’re an artist, check my blog tomorrow for details about an upcoming Plein Air Workshop that I will be conducting in Southern California soon.

This was painted during a private Plein Air class I recently held for another artist. It was the site of the first show in my TV series.

The student wanted to paint there with me because she is moving to another part of the country and wanted one last hurrah before she goes. Enjoy!

URBAN PLEIN AIR LANDSCAPE by TOM BROWN

“NEAR THE FREEWAY”
5x7 inch California impressionist
plein air oil painting by Tom Brown

Recently a friend and I painted together in the city. On the outskirts of the city I found this interesting scene. I got a few stares from confused passersby as I painted this, but beauty is where you find it and this appealed to me. I hope you find the beauty in your day, wherever that is. Thanks for looking.

By the way, I want to thank everyone for such enthusiastic replies about my online art lessons “COLOR MIXING MADE EASY” and “SANTIAGO SUNSET”.

I’m pleased everyone has found them so useful. I wish I could thank each of you personally for your kind comments. Thanks again for your glowing feedback. Keep an eye on this blog for more online art lessons soon.

One more thing: I have a new Plein Air workshop beginning November 14 in Orange County. We will meet for 5 Saturday mornings to paint on location. Email me for further information if you’re interested.

PLEIN AIR LANDSCAPE, FREE ONLINE ART LESSON by TOM BROWN

“SANTIAGO CANYON ROAD”
5x7 inch California impressionist
plein air oil painting by Tom Brown
And a FREE online art lesson!
(See below.)

Here we go again. I’m still in Santiago Canyon, same as the past two days. This one was painted in the late afternoon along Santiago Canyon Road. Compare this to yesterday’s painting and you’ll see that the light had changed considerably between the noon painting I did and late afternoon when I painted this one.

The light is always much more vibrant and colors are more saturated late in the afternoon. It’s one of my favorite times to paint. I didn’t take many liberties with this scene; it was already an ideal composition. This was one of those magical ones that almost painted itself while I just hung on to the brush and went along for the ride.

Yesterday I offered an ALL-NEW FREE ONLINE ART LESSON for all my fans out there in cyberspace. The lesson featured a painting done in a different part of this same canyon, and it deals with a particular brush stroke technique that can add lots of impact to your own work.

It’s still available. If you haven’t requested it yet, email me for your free copy at tombrownstudio@cox.net and ask for the “SANTIAGO Mini-Lesson.”

AFFORDABLE IMPRESSIONIST PLEIN AIR PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“ROADSIDE ATTRACTION”
5x7 inch California impressionist
plein air oil painting by Tom Brown

Trucks and cars occasionally whipped past as I painted this from the edge of a rural road. But this was too good to pass up. The trusty painting kit that I keep in my car made it possible to set up and capture this scene despite the unlikely location.

For this painting I used the same lightweight metal paintbox that I used at the abandoned airfield in yesterday’s blog post. In moments I can set up to paint. When I’m finished, I simply close the lid and everything is packed to safely transport home.

Once again I felt it would be of interest to other artists to see photos of the actual scene, along with the painting as it developed.

Enthusiastic replies continue to pour in about my online art lesson on “COLOR MIXING MADE EASY”. Again, thank you all for your kind words; I wish I could answer each of you individually.

Keep an eye on this blog for another completely FREE mini art lesson soon. It incorporates a number of concepts covered in the COLOR MIXING guide.

AFFORDABLE IMPRESSIONIST PLEIN AIR PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“DON’T FENCE ME IN”
5x7 inch California impressionist
plein air oil painting by Tom Brown

I sometimes jump over fences to reach and paint an interesting scene. In this case I decided I could work by simply looking through the cyclone fence that blocked the edge of this abandoned airfield.

I shot a few photos to show the actual scene along with my painting as it developed. Fellow artists who follow this blog might find the photos interesting.

Once again I want to thank everyone for such enthusiastic replies about my online art lesson on “COLOR MIXING MADE EASY”. I’m pleased everyone has found it so eye-opening and helpful. Especially the sections on greens, spectrum grays and my favorite: “optical” color mixing. Thanks again for your kind words.

AFFORDABLE IMPRESSIONIST PLEIN AIR PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“WIND-SWEPT SKIES”
5x7 inch California impressionist
plein air oil painting by Tom Brown

As a small boy I remember watching cloud formations with my brothers and finding animals and other things that were formed by the shapes. Billowing clouds were piled high in the sky on the day I created this painting, forming a dramatic scene that was irresistible.

In fact, the clouds continued moving across the sky even during the night. And so I found myself once again outdoors in the middle of the night painting another nocturne. Check back tomorrow to see that painting also.

Meanwhile if you’re interested, today’s painting is very affordably priced. Email me for details: tombrownstudio@cox.net

NOCTURNE PLEIN AIR PAINTING, FREE ONLINE ART LESSON by TOM BROWN

“STARRY, STARRY NIGHT”
5x7 inch California impressionist
plein air oil painting by Tom Brown
SOLD

Painting nocturnes is a refreshing variation of plein air painting. The scene emerges gradually as the eye adjusts, away from bright lights. The night sky is filled with gentle and rich hues like an impromptu arrangement of musical notes that will never be heard again. It is a wonderful experience.

I use a small headlamp that illuminates my palette and painting as I work. A photo of it was included in a blog post earlier this week when I showed another nocturne plein air painting. And I use my small, compact plein air paintbox that sets up in moments. It’s perfect for a night excursion.

If you are an artist who has never tried your hand at plein air nocturnes, I encourage you to give it a try. I have created a FREE ONLINE ART LESSON packed with tips on how to get started. Email me for your free copy.

This painting is very affordably priced. Email me for details: tombrownstudio@cox.net. Thanks for looking.

IMPRESSIONIST PLEIN AIR PAINTING, FREE ONLINE ART LESSON by TOM BROWN

“MAGIC MOMENTS”
6x8 inch California impressionist
plein air oil painting by Tom Brown

Yesterday I posted a plein air nocturne and offered a FREE ONLINE ART LESSON for other artists, packed with tips on how to get started. Email me for your free copy if you’re interested. And keep an eye on my blog to see another plein air nocturne soon.

Today’s painting was done on location (en plein air) at the edge of a wetland wildlife preserve. I was particularly interested in the reflection of the trees in the water.

Near the distant bank the surface of the water was opaque, but in the foreground the water became more transparent and I could see hints of the rocks beneath the water. I wanted to capture that effect in this painting and I was pleased with the results. I hope you like it too.

This painting is very affordably priced. Email me for details: tombrownstudio@cox.net

TWILIGHT PLEIN AIR PAINTING, FREE ONLINE ART LESSON by TOM BROWN

5x7 inch California impressionist
plein air oil painting by Tom Brown

Yesterday I posted a plein air nocturne and offered a FREE ONLINE ART LESSON for other artists, packed with tips on how to get started. Email me for your free copy if you’re interested.

Today’s painting was done just before twilight, during that magic time when the fading light creates dusty soft hues across the sky and eases us gently into evening.

When I had finished this painting I cleaned my palette and put out fresh paint in preparation for another nocturne painting. I didn’t have long to wait. By the time I had grabbed some dinner and taken care of a few tasks it was dark and I was ready to set out for anther night painting session.

Check back tomorrow to see the results. To purchase this painting, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

FULL MOON, NOCTURNE PLEIN AIR PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“FULL MOON NOCTURNE”
5x7 inch California impressionist
plein air oil painting by Tom Brown
SOLD

Painting nocturnes is a refreshing variation of plein air painting. The only addition to my usual plein air equipment is a small headlamp that attaches to my cap.

The headlamp illuminates my palette and painting as I work. Once my eyes adjust to the darkness, an amazing variety of subtle color becomes evident.

I have been painting nocturnes at a variety of locations recently, and I will post some others on my blog in the days to come.

This painting was done at the edge of a farm near my home, with a full moon rising over the landscape. A golden halo surrounded the moon, and a warm light reflected into the lower sky from stores, houses and traffic along a distant road. It was a peaceful and delightful experience.

If you are an artist who has never tried your hand at plein air nocturnes, I encourage you to give it a try. I have created a FREE ONLINE ART LESSON packed with tips on how to get started. Email me for your free copy.
