PALETTE KNIFE PAINTING & VIDEO BY TOM BROWN

"ON THE ROAD AGAIN"
5x7 INCH PALETTE KNIFE
PLEIN AIR PAINTING BY
TOM BROWN
To purchase this painting email tombrownstudio@cox.net

Surface texture can be an important part of a painting's visual appeal. In a recent YouTube video I demonstrated this while painting on location with a palette knife rather than using a brush.

The scene shown here was also painted in the same way. It was created on location, working directly from nature to capture the honesty of light and color.

OIL PAINTING & VIDEO

SOLD

Watch me paint this on YouTube. Click the type above the image and look over my shoulder as I paint this from the edge of a country road.

I thought I had chosen a quiet spot to paint, and soon found that this was NOT a quiet country road after all. To paraphrase Forrest Gump, plein air painting is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.

Have a look and enjoy the ride. To purchase this little gem, email me at tombrownstudio@cox.net. Thanks for stopping by.

LARGE STUDIO PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

"ABANDONED BUT NOT FORGOTTEN, II"
16x10 inch studio oil painting
by Tom Brown

To purchase this painting email tombrownstudio@cox.net

This may be of interest to collectors and artists alike.

I sometimes create small Plein Air studies as the basis for larger paintings done in the studio. (This is a common practice among Plein Air painters and galleries often display both the study and larger studio painting together.)

Recently I posted a 5x7 inch study of this scene. It shows a remote corner of the abandoned El Toro Military base in Southern California. I later used that study as the basis of today's painting, which is a larger studio piece.

In the original study I was particularly interested in the color differences among the large trees. I wanted to retain that in this painting, along with the added color spots of the buildings. I also wanted to capture the abandoned feeling of these derelict structures.

Happily I was able to duplicate that in the large painting, while adding further interest through subtle brush techniques and other means.

The small study was done with a palette knife, which offers a quick and efficient means of recording the essence of a subject. (This is something I'll be teaching in my upcoming series of Plein Air Workshops.)

The larger painting shown here was done with brushes, in the usual style I use for gallery works. (Another lesson in my Plein Air Workshops.)

The 5x7 inch study proved to be a frame-worthy little jewel in its own right. And this 16x10 inch studio piece improves upon that. I'm really pleased with both, and intend to include them both in the book of my paintings to be released later this year.

In case you missed it, the study was filmed live as I painted it. You can see it on YouTube by clicking on the type above the image here. It lets you look over my shoulder as I paint.

I wanted to share this with everyone today. Thanks for looking and have a great day.

LARGE CALIFORNIA PLEIN AIR SEASCAPE by TOM BROWN

"SATURDAY MORNING SURF"
11x17 inch Impressionist Plein Air
Original Oil Painting by Tom Brown

This painting was done at the ocean this past weekend during a Plein Air class I conducted for a group of artists. This painting focused on capturing the swell of the ocean, the spray of the surf crashing on rocks and the movement of the waves. Seagulls occasionally landed atop the huge, craggy rock and added a sense of scale to the composition.

I was pleased with the results and I hope you like it too. If you would like to own this painting email me for purchasing details at tombrownstudio@cox.net

Thundering waves pounded these ocean rocks with a deafening roar. The spray flew high into the air, misting over me as I worked. It was an exciting day for painting at the ocean.

To capture the spirit and energy of the moment I used bold, dynamic strokes of thick, juicy oil paint. This one was all about my emotional reaction to the scene.

No fussy details here; when I felt I had captured the essence of the scene the painting was finished.

Today is another rainy day, so I decided to stay in the studio again and paint another still life rather than venture out on location for plein air painting. As I said yesterday, I'm a "fair weather" plein air painter.

IMPRESSIONIST STILL LIFE by TOM BROWN

Original Oil Painting

To purchase this painting email tombrownstudio@cox.net

I always enjoy painting still life subjects. Especially something with stunning color like this.

Today was somewhat rainy so I decided to stay in the studio and paint a still life rather than venture out to paint on location. I'll admit it; I'm a "fair weather" plein air painter. When rain threatens I prefer to stay indoors.

My friendly neighbor gave me a branch from his orange tree to use in this composition. It added that special touch to the painting of oranges and the vase with blue and gold accents.

This one was a pure joy to paint - and I stayed nice and dry too. Hope you like it.

Thanks for looking, and I wish you a colorful day.

BOAT AND SEA GULLS PLEIN AIR PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“A BLUR OF GULLS”
8x10 inch plein air oil painting
by Tom Brown

To purchase this painting, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

A shrieking blur of gulls swarmed this little boat as I painted it.

Seagulls had discovered something to eat in this boat and descended on it in a wild feeding frenzy. My brush fairly flew across the canvas to capture the effect while it lasted.

When the commotion was over I felt I had captured the essence of the moment in this painting. I hope you like it.

IMPRESSIONIST PLEIN AIR by TOM BROWN

"A STREAK OF WHITE"
8x10 inch Acrylic Impressionist
Daily Painting by Tom Brown

For purchasing details email tombrownstudio@cox.net

This is unusual for me - it's an acrylic painting and I am an oil painter. But in the past I had worked extensively in acrylics as well and I have a familiarity with those paints too.

An artist friend who paints with acrylics asked for my help in trying to master my oil painting techniques in his own paintings while using acrylics. This is a demonstration painting I did for him while using his acrylic paints.

A special focus in this lesson was how to soften edges of forms with these quick-drying paints. This is often a problem for acrylic painters, which was the case with my friend.

In the detail image you can see how I used this technique where the white clouds meet the edge of the tree shapes. A soft edge here can help the eye move more easily from the shape of the tree into the sky and create greater unity within the overall painting.

Another area where this was important was in the sky area itself where the soft white clouds disappear into the blue sky, as well as where the blue sky softly blends into the layer of subtle color toward the bottom the the detail image.

I was pleased with the results in this acrylic painting and I thought it would be interesting to share it here with you.

As always if you would like to own this little treasure or other paintings on my blog, simply email me at tombrownstudio@cox.net.

Artists are constantly seeking the spark of inspiration that makes the heart beat faster with possibilities. This one came unexpectedly at the end of the day when impossibly soft and subtle colors streaked quietly across the sky.

In moments my brush was flying across the surface to record this special twilight moment. All too soon it vanished from the sky - but I had preserved it here in this little jewel.

This one is very special. With the right frame it will become the focal point of any room. If you would like to own it, email me at tombrownstudio@cox.net

IMPRESSIONIST PLEIN AIR by TOM BROWN

"ANCIENT SENTINAL"
6x8 inch Plein Air Impressionist
Original Oil Painting
by Tom Brown

For purchasing details: tombrownstudio@cox.net

The weathered trunk and peeling layers of bark on this ancient eucalyptus tree caught my eye. Roots had been revealed by erosion along the river bank where I spotted this scene, and I decided to feature these elements in my painting as well.

I found the age of this tree an interesting contrast with the newly-planted young tree nearby, and chose to include that in my painting.

Attached is a photo of the actual scene. The sun had gone behind a cloud when I shot the photo, but it provides a comparison of the scene as I painted it, and how a camera sees it.

I was pleased with this piece. Let me know if you like it too. Thanks for looking.
