Here’s a small piece I painted in the studio from a plein air sketch I did once when we were driving through the desert. The distant mountain range had stunning snow caps and I had stopped to sketch it for later use in the studio. Here’s the result. I’m happy with this one and hope you like it too.

LARGE PLEIN AIR PAINTING WITH A STORY by TOM BROWN, TREES, MOUNTAINS, SKY

What’s the great attraction of Plein Air paintings?

They involve all the senses, and it shows in the paintings. The sweet scent of fresh air, the warmth of sunlight and sounds of birds all find their way into the painting.

They capture the true spirit of the place.

These sensual experiences are visible in the finished paintings. That’s the big attraction of Plein Air paintings, for artists, galleries and collectors alike.

But there’s a problem – Nature’s light changes rapidly. And that limits the amount of time an artist has to record the scene. And so most plein air paintings are done on a smaller scale for practical reasons.

This was an exception. Many of my students wanted to see how I would capture this scene in a larger painting, while still completing the entire painting on location while the light remained constant.

A few hours and a lifetime of experience is all it takes – along with inspiration and a bit of luck.

Paintings done outdoors on location like this involve all the senses: the clean scent of fresh air, the feeling of sunshine on my shoulders, the sweet sounds of birds chirping in the trees. And all those wonderful feelings bring something unique to the painting itself.

I never know what I’ll discover when exploring the countryside with my paintbox. That’s one of the thrills of painting on location (en plein air), directly from nature.

Sharing these visual treats with others is my goal. For a while I can still offer these little treasures at very affordable prices so that more collectors can afford them until I resume gallery affiliations late next year.

My larger paintings were represented through galleries nationwide for more than 20 years. My TV show also created a great demand for my paintings and my work is in many major corporate and private collections.

“IN THE SHADE OF THE SPREADING SYCAMORE” by Tom Brown
LARGE PLEIN AIR PAINTING
18”x9” ORIGINAL OIL ON CANVAS, READY TO FRAME


The painting shown at the top of today’s blog is an 18” canvas that was painted on location during my usual Saturday plein air workshop. I was attracted by the sprawling limbs of this ancient Sycamore tree and the dappled light filtering through the branches.

Shown beneath this painting are two 4”x3” studies that were done to explore possibilities before tackling a larger canvas. The first study was painted in early morning as the sun illuminated the limbs of the Sycamore, and the second was done at noon when the sun was directly overhead, as shown in the large painting.

I began this week’s workshop by having all the artists create a series of small studies like these. This exercise helped loosen everyone up and get the creative juices flowing. It also helped each artist clarify the essential elements of a composition without getting caught up in fussy details. By the time everyone had done a few of these quickies, they were warmed up and ready to tackle a larger canvas with authority.

The surprise is that these little gems often make very frame-worthy paintings in their own right!
