OUTDOOR NIGHT PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“MOONLIGHT SONATA IN OILS”
6x8 INCH PLEIN AIR NOCTURNE
ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING
BY TOM BROWN
SOLD

A full moon was scheduled and it was too much to resist. I decided to capture it in an oil painting, done outdoors on location at night.

I scouted several locations in advance, to find the best spot to paint from. And I took note of the best time to see the moon at this point in the sky.

Then on the night I planned to paint this, I carefully packed my night-painting equipment and headed out. Before I ventured out to paint this I shot a quick video to describe my night painting gear and a few other tips. The painting above was the result of this session.

Enjoy the view, and if you would like to purchase this painting, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

This painting is about the essence of the subject rather than unnecessary details.

I wanted to capture the SPIRIT of Los Angeles at sunset, complete with fiery colors in the sky and palms dancing across the foreground. This painting is not for the timid. It has bold, delicious color and a strong composition.

It’s one of those paintings that will surprise you with new little discoveries every time you view it. Enjoy the view. And if you would like to own this piece, email me for purchasing details: tombrownstudio@cox.net

There are many reasons an artist might choose to paint a subject.

Perhaps it triggers a special memory or mood. Or there may be an intriguing story within the painting. Other times it can be something as simple as the classic beauty of the subject itself.

The latter reason applies to this particular painting. It shows palm trees gently swaying in a balmy breeze, overlooking a peaceful ocean vista. This was painted in Laguna Beach, California on a quiet, restful day. My easel was set up next to the Las Brisas restaurant.

It is a larger canvas than I normally paint outdoors on location. Larger canvases take longer to complete and so they present a greater challenge. But on this particular occasion I was in the zone and it all came together perfectly. Enjoy the moment. And thanks for looking.

PLEIN AIR LANDSCAPE BY TOM BROWN

“COMMUNING WITH NATURE”
6x8 INCH ORIGINAL PLEIN AIR
OIL PAINTING BY TOM BROWN
To purchase email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net
SOLD

In some of my recent blog posts I showed paintings where I had greatly “pushed” the color. This painting has very subdued color by contrast with those. I painted this on location in early morning light, which creates colors that are much softer.

This little pochade painting was done as pure self-indulgence. I took a small piece of the early morning to get out alone with my paints to this quiet spot where I could relax, commune with nature, and enjoy the beauty of the world before the day became a whirl of activity.

I hope you can sense the relaxation I felt at the moment. And I wish you a wonderful day.

The surprising colors that occur in the sky at sunset always excite me. This is one of my favorite times to be outdoors with my paints. In this plein air painting you can see the last rays of sunlight grazing the foreground trees and creating a golden glow on the distant foothills. I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time – with my paints handy! Enjoy the view.

FRUIT & FLOWERS PALETTE KNIFE PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“THE COLORS OF SUMMER”
6x8 INCH ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING
BY TOM BROWN

My usual style of painting is done with brushes, but occasionally I like to complete an entire painting with the palette knife. It creates a very bold and dynamic effect, as you can see in this colorful floral piece. And alternating between the two styles of painting keeps me fresh in each style. I hope you like it.

ART VIDEO, TOM BROWN PLEIN AIR LANDSCAPE

“GOLDEN CLIFFS ACROSS THE BAY”
Approximately 5x7 INCH
ORIGINAL PLEIN AIR OIL PAINTING
BY TOM BROWN

This was my first demo of the day while teaching a Plein Air Workshop for an Art League on Saturday. It is a vignette in oils on canvas, done as a study to demonstrate how to approach the scene to create an eye-catching painting.

Blocking in interesting shapes of value and color masses was the initial step. Then working with the sculptural thickness of the paint itself on the canvas. This helps to communicate the form and texture of the golden cliffs across the bay. Take a look at the detail image for a better look at the textural qualities of this little study.

I love dining in the fresh air. Food always tastes better and the experience is always refreshing. When I lived in Chicago the weather prevented outdoor dining much of the year. But in Southern California where I now live outdoor dining is a daily possibility.

I decided to paint this piece with a palette knife for a change of pace. Occasionally painting with just a knife keeps my work fresher when I return to painting with a brush.

Thanks for looking, have a delightful day.

BOLD, COLORFUL PALETTE KNIFE PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

"ABANDONED"
5x7 INCH ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING
BY TOM BROWN

To purchase this painting email tombrownstudio@cox.net

I've painted this derelict building in the past, but couldn't resist capturing it one more time while I was in the area and had my pochade paintbox handy. To paint this picture I used my palette knife, which results in very bold and dynamic statements of color and value. It adds a lot of punch to small paintings like this.

I enjoy switching from painting with a brush to working exclusively with a palette knife as I did this time. By varying the approach I find that it keeps my work fresher in each medium.

I love the colors in the scene, with the towering trees, the building tucked away beneath and the randomness of the foreground. Something about it speaks to me. Hope you like it, too.

Thanks for looking.
