I like to alternate between painting with a palette knife and using a brush. Each is unique, and alternating between the two painting methods keeps my work fresh in each medium. This one was done with a palette knife, and it really sizzles with color.

This is the harbor at Balboa Island in Newport Beach. I took artistic liberties with the scene to create a more appealing result than the camera sees.

I enhanced the color and sparkle of the water, adjusted the degree of detail on the distant shore and brought some lively brushwork into the painting.

I have painted this charming area many times, both alone and with other artists during plein air workshops I conduct. On the day shown in this painting it was slightly overcast, which muted the colors throughout the scene. The effect is very restful and serene.
