In this painting I wanted to capture the sparkle of light shimmering across the bay. It was painted during the plein air workshop I taught Saturday at Newport Back Bay. It was a very windy day but the setting was perfect and we all had an enjoyable day painting in the fresh air.

As much as I enjoy creating large commissioned paintings in the studio, I still treasure the time spent on location where I create little jewels like this directly from nature. I generally paint small on location so that I can capture the essence of the scene quickly, before conditions change.

This painting is an example of times when one must paint without hesitation. The clouds were moving fast and the light would fade quickly as well. I needed to move with a sure brush or lose the opportunity. I did exactly that, and I got it!

One bonus of small paintings like this is the power of a well-placed brushstroke. Each stroke of the brush and each "piece" of paint carries a great deal of impact and strength in a small painting.

Wild green parrots were creating a terrific racket in these trees as I worked on this painting, hence the title. They’re beautiful, but really loud! What a great spot this was. It’s another remote location I reached on my mountain bike with the special painting kit attached to it and I was glad to be able to paint here. Click the picture to see a larger image.

Yesterday I posted a painting of a freeway bridge, and today I’m showing another painting that’s a bit different for me - a combination of pristine scenic beauty and urban/industrial subject matter. Heavy machinery is moving in to transform a strawberry farm into modern housing. I liked the stunning yellow of the machinery against the colors of the landscape, and I especially enjoyed the tracks crisscrossing the foreground. I hope you like it too.

A freeway bridge, a cyclone fence and a few signs - beauty is anywhere you find it. This is the I-5 freeway in Orange County, with a sign indicating exit 95 and 133 south in case you’re interested in details. The lighting, shapes and color caught my eye and demanded to be painted. I especially liked the reflected light under the bridge and the shadows of trees on the side of the bridge as well as the cyclone fence.

This painting shows the stunning colors of late afternoon light on Saddleback Mountain, not far from my home. I am a full-time professional artist living in Southern California. I also teach plein air workshops and studio classes for other artists. I found this spot while scouting for locations to hold future workshops.

When I spotted this the sun was about to set and I was captivated by the beautiful colors on the mountain. I quickly opened my paintbox and recorded this scene on canvas. I am very pleased with this one and I hope you like it too.

Here’s a quick study done on my way home after I finished painting a landscape on location. This car was reflecting stunning colors from the sky and setting sun that I really wanted to get on canvas. I had to work fast because the car was illegally parked and I knew it would be moved shortly. The drawing is a bit off, but I got the colors right! Doesn’t it sparkle?
