This was painted earlier today during a Plein Air Workshop I conducted for other artists. It shows the entrance to a peaceful walking trail among the trees. I was interested in the color variations within the trees and the stonework at the entrance to the path. It was a beautiful morning to be outside with my paints.

Today’s painting was created en plein air (on location), at the edge of a busy street. The morning light was my inspiration, and I chose to use loads of thick juicy paint to describe the scene. I’m including a couple of detail photos to show the delicious texture of paint on the canvas, as well as a photo of the scene taken while I was painting.

“LITTLE TREASURE”

While setting up to paint at the ocean this morning I spotted this small child discovering buried treasures in the sand. I quickly did a few pencil sketches to capture the feeling I wanted, then painted this 6x8 inch oil on canvas. I thought it might be interesting to show some of my sketches as well as the painting. Santiago Canyon is a short drive from my home and it offers a serene getaway from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The only sounds are birds chirping and an occasional car passing on a distant road.

This painting was done purely for personal pleasure, to revel in the serenity of the moment.
