ABANDONED BRIDGE, 5x7 PLEIN AIR LANDSCAPE by TOM BROWN

While on a road trip I spotted this abandoned bridge crossing a deep ravine. On the other side of the ravine the road simply ended. I call this one "THE BRIDGE TO NOWHERE".

It was too much to resist. I immediately set up my pochade box and let my brushes to go to work.

This one almost painted itself; I just grabbed the brush and held on for the ride.

SHOOTING STAR, NOCTURN, PLEIN AIR PAINTING by TOM BROWN

Yes, this actually WAS painted "en plein air". I enjoy painting night scenes outdoors at night, directly from life.

As I was nearly finished with this painting I happened to glimpse a shooting star streaking across the night sky. I immediately added that to the painting while the image was fresh in my mind.

I have a light weight portable pochade paint box that I use for painting on location at night, and I use a small miner's lamp affixed to my cap for illumination. I demonstrate this setup in one of my YouTube videos. Here’s a link:

COLORFUL CALIFORNIA IMPRESSIONIST PLEIN AIR PAINTING by TOM BROWN

I painted this looking toward Saddleback Mountain on a day when clouds were shading the mountaintop. I thought it would be interesting to also show the Plein Air easel I used when painting this. It's a very light weight easel that sets up instantly, and safely stores the finished painting when I'm done. This easel setup allows me to travel easily to remote locations to paint.

ARTIST'S STUDIO, BRUSHES, COLORFUL STILL LIFE by TOM BROWN

“TOOLS OF THE TRADE”
12x16 INCH ORIGINAL OIL
by TOM BROWN

I am showing a photo of the actual still life to compare with my painting. You can see that I have taken artistic license in order to enhance the visual appeal. I've made the brush holders a bit larger and added more brushes to them. I've enhanced the reflective colors shown in the large brush jar. And to help direct the focus to the tabletop area I have included less detail in the background. I thought it would be interesting to show the photo here as an example of how I make changes when I'm painting.

Thanks for looking, and have an artistic day!

TREES, BIRDS IN FLIGHT, PLEIN AIR LANDSCAPE by TOM BROWN

If you look closely in the sky to the right of the trees you will see several birds taking flight. This happened while I was painting this on location (en plein air). I quickly added them to the painting that was already nearly finished. I think it added that extra touch to make this one very special.

COLORFUL CALIFORNIA IMPRESSIONIST PLEIN AIR by Tom Brown

Painting this took great care and total abandon. Like walking a tightrope.

It's a matter of waiting, and waiting, and waiting - until everything is JUST right. Then grabbing a heavily loaded brush and letting the paint fly!

It's a risk. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. This time it did!

I really enjoyed loading on thick strokes of juicy oil paints to make a dramatic statement. I was very pleased with the results, and hope you like it too.

BTW - I thought it would be interesting to show a photo of the location where this was painted. It shows the difference between an artist's interpretation and what the camera sees.

IMPRESSIONIST PLEIN AIR LANDSCAPE PAINTING by TOM BROWN

Today I’m once again showing a photo of my favorite outdoor painting kit, which makes it easy to access hard-to-reach locations when I want to paint them en plein air.

This compact pochade box carries my wet palette of paints and the panel I’ll paint on. It’s very lightweight and yet quite sturdy. It sets up instantly on a standard camera tripod, and it holds my panel while I paint.

When I’m done, I can simply close the lid and my painting is stored safely inside. Best of all this pochade box cost pocket change, and yet it’s the equal of commercial kits that cost hundreds of dollars.

This 5x7 inch oil painting can be purchased directly from my Etsy store.

VANISHING AMERICA, BARN, ORIGINAL 5x7-inch OIL PAINTING by TOM BROWN

Barns are icons of a time when life moved at a more relaxed pace. They're symbols of honest, unpretentious labor. There's something pure about that and I've always enjoyed painting them.

I recall a time when I was painting one on a remote farm and chatting with the owner who was as weathered as old barn wood. He felt he was living in Paradise on his land, and he commented:

"In the country you're talkin' with Mother Nature; that's as it should be. In the city all you see is what man and government are doin'. That ain't no way to live."

So here's a memory of barns, and a vanishing time. Enjoy.

LAGUNA BEACH COASTAL SEASCAPE, CALIFORNIA IMPRESSIONIST PLEIN AIR by Tom Brown

For all the other artists who email me and say they enjoy the location photos I sometimes show, I’m including a few pictures that were taken where today’s painting was done. Enjoy! Here’s a portion of one of those emails (from an artist in South Africa):

“I have purchased two of your videos that are helping me understand how to paint impressionist style.

As previously stated, I love to study your photograph and painting together to see
1. How you choose and arrange your subject matter
 2. Simplify the painting
3. Give an artistic interpretation.

Thank you for sharing your pictures and paintings.”

NOSTALGIA, MAIN STREET, SMALL TOWN AMERICA, PLEIN AIR PAINTING by TOM BROWN

I felt a rare sense of peacefulness here that seems missing from today’s world. That’s what made me want to paint this.

I wanted to capture that feeling and keep it alive; my emotional response to the quiet peaceful mood on this small town’s “Main Street” in early morning light before the world woke up.

This actually IS a street named “Main Street” in a small town in early morning light. The world was not yet awake. The light and mood brought back cherished memories from my childhood, and I wanted to record feeling that in this quick study.

Artists are attracted to plein air painting for a variety of reasons. It might be to create a finished painting directly from the source of inspiration, or to gather information for future studio paintings, test an idea, record a mood, gain brush mileage, or for the simple pleasure of playing with paints and images.

This study was done a combination of those reasons and more. When I began this it was intended only to be a STUDY; to capture the mood and the effects of the early morning light. It wasn’t intended to be a finished painting.

But once I completed this study I realized it had a certain artistic flair as a finished painting in its own right. This painting is a vignette on unstretched canvas.

In one of the photos you can see this painting inside my pochade paint box. The overall canvas size is 8x10 inches. The painted image area is approximately 6x9 inches.

This will look very charming in the right frame, and I’m showing some framing suggestions here as examples.

LAGUNA BEACH PALMS, COASTAL PALETTE KNIFE PAINTING by TOM BROWN

PAINTING WITH A PALETTE KNIFE is FUN and SIMPLE.

It’s a great way to capture something like this scene with a minimum of fuss. The clean, strong colors and distinctive strokes create paintings with a freshness and impact unique to knife painting. The results are always eye-catching and fresh. Like this painting of Laguna Beach palm trees.

And it’s so immediate. All I need are my paints and a knife. There are no brushes to clean later, no solvents to mix or spill. I just open my paint box and get started. When I’m done I wipe the knife on a tissue and cleanup is complete.

If you’d like to join the fun, I can help you get started right. MY VIDEO SHOWS EXACTLY HOW I USE THE KNIFE. You can watch me demonstrate all my techniques, tips, secrets and shortcuts in live action. It’s a short video but it’s PACKED with information you can use right away.

-- I’ll show you types of knife styles available
(including some you can easily make yourself)
-- you’ll watch my personal knife techniques as I paint,
-- you’ll see different ways I handle the knife to create edge control,
-- you can copy how I use underpainting and overpainting,
-- you’ll see how I put figures into paintings (it’s easy),
-- I’ll show you how I paint on a toned surface (and also on white panels of course),
-- I’ll demonstrate my different techniques to paint trees,
-- you’ll watch me create eye-catching surface texture,
-- and much more.

This palette knife painting was created with rich color and texture to add sparkle and life to the painting. I thought it would also be interesting to show a photo here of the easel I use when painting outdoors (en plein air).

I hope you enjoyed your visit here today.
